A diverting idea? Who, what, where, when in 2010 did you find yourself raising an eyebrow or glass in salute to the urban achievements of others? Equally, whom did you consider to be a prime example of a human paraquat? Duders to be awarded at the end of the year (or start of next year); give the thing a little time to build up some momentum. Maybe we can open up a new thread/page for each category. Let's try and look beyond TBL.
Suggested categories:Literature (fiction and non-fiction) / Music (Blues/Rock/Alternative/Indie/World/Other) Environmentalism Science Art
Well you get the idea, I'm sure some Dudes can come up with some fun stuff - I'm a little 'funned' out. Some ideas on designs of the 'virtual' awards would be good, too. 8)
Fuck it. Screw you guys, I'm going home.
MUSIC: Tom Petty for MOJO! The concert was awesome!
For the "Sticking it to the Man" Category, I choose that flight attendant who said "fuck it" to JetBlue (in the parlance of our times), nabbed a couple of oat sodas, and split for the nearest exit, taking his dignity with him. Well...that, and a pair of testicles.
Captain Beefheart.

Fuckin'a it's about time someone got a real pro-pot campaign going.
It would be just our luck it becomes legal in 2013 just as the world ends!
Yeah, come to think of it, making pot legal would probably do it! 8^)

It's going to end in 2013? I did not know that. ;D Better get us a lane.
That's going to be a line (on the cover of the book) "Just in time for the end of the world". I thought the civilization (as we know it) was scheduled to end sometime in December 2012 - damn it, now I'm gonna have to buy Xmas gifts, after all.

If it's December 2012 I'm concentrating on zesty coitus as a new career move from now until then.

2012 is a huge misunderstanding of the Mayan calendar.
I do recommend this site (http://www.thestar.com/entertainment/movies/article/717755--why-the-world-won-t-end-in-2012).
Common misconception because the Mayan Calendar seems to end in 2012 they believed the world would end. Mayan culture unlike xian culture was (is) not apocalyptic (did not believe the world would end in some huge disaster).
The Mayan calendar does not actually end in 2012 but the current phase does, that is the 13th phase of a 20 phase cycle, which actually ends in 2,700 years. even then all that happens is you start again.
My own take on the 2012 thing is perfectly covered here:

Yeah, we were just rolling the laughs out there (there are one or two documentaries about that actually deal with the subject in a coherent way. Quite astounding these days - the press love to keep the sheep nervous). Personally I'm gonna start hanging around rich folk - come Dec. 2012 - and convince them that their last chance to get on board the Rapture train will be to give all their cash to me.
Oh the Rapture game, my buddy gave me a book outlining a bunch of deals/scams to get rich off the Rapture. My favorite is a pet care service, "when you get called to heaven, you don't want your cats or dogs to go hungry or homeless. I already know I will not be going to heaven with you, so for a modest insurance premium I will go round up and feed your pets when you get raptured. Sign here please."

2012!!?
Damn, I'm always the LAST to know! ;D
Right. Back to the Awards. My nomination would be ISS - the International Space Station. Alright, I know, it's not a person. What I mean is the whole idea. Just look at that - two of the most active participants of the ISS - the US and Russia - where sworn enemies not more than 20 yers ago. Now, together with Europeans, Japaneese and Canadiens, they've built and share this amazing human achievement - a real space station flying there, above our beautiful planet. What I mean is - when I first got into it I went on youtube and found a film where American astronaut gives a tour of the station. He flies through it and there you go - past him flies a bloke from Russia and another one, he goes a bit further and there's Japaneese fella, he carries on - at the junction there's not one, but two black guys - not long ago some of the "civilised" countries didn't consider them proper humans and now they're member of our eilte. At this point I tought - well, I don't see many women there. Next movie - three women on the station at the same time. It doesn't matter what color or sex etc. you are. You have the qualification - you go there. Ok, you still have to be born in the right country, but at least that's a start.
I think it's beautiful.
It shows, that even politicians, e.i. fucking human paraquats, can get above divisions and actually do something together for the benefit of humanity. Ok, I know, in practice it's never so perfect. Maybe behind the closed doors they struggle all the time, but ultimately they managed to do it and somehow it works. I think it deserves a recognition.
Am I wrong? Okay then.
Awesome nomination Dude, well thought out.
Cheers
Good idea - it is a beautiful concept, Dude: so, a thread for Dudely Concepts (2010) before they are fucked-up?
Yep, now is the right time to sum up 2010. I'd stick to your categories, maybe add more, but basic idea is great. I'm trying to come up with something in music, 'cause that's one of the most important things for me. At the moment I've got nothing. Come on, people, get to work!
Welcome to the Forum jakubol, Dude - any rug in the place, the bar's over there.
Most Dudes will probably know what music I'd put up but as you're new here, this is for you (my nomination - best album, group): http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=eN_dE-oCozs (http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=eN_dE-oCozs)
Edit: the track that album comes from Water is Life was released in 2007 (I think); they released one last year but I haven't done anything with that - yet.
Somedude wanna be moderator for this Board? Open a few new headed threads? I've got fish to fry, right now - doesn't have to be quick; award ceremonies always seem to take place before the year is up - so, it will still be for 2010. Actually, that's quite Dudely; "hey, what year is this? Oh, right - here's your award for last year man. Still need an award/badge design.
QuoteMy nomination would be ISS
I'd agree with that and as an aside here's a link to how she was all built....the dudes who conceived this massive project should all be recognised I feel...The biggest meccano set ever built... http://i.usatoday.net/tech/graphics/iss_timeline/flash.htm

Welcome back dude! ;D
Yep, that's true. I've been here for a while, but somehow only recently I decided I have something decent to say :)
@cakebelly: Mate, this is brilliant! Is there a better way to show that we're all the same? Best proof you can find! I second that for music category.
@ Cesar dude: Nice animation, especially the space shuttle. I recommend looking for films of shuttles docking to the ISS, because since the crash of the Columbia they make a 360 degrees turn before docking to check any damage in the thermal shield. It looks really amazing - 28000 mph around Earth and this thing turning around. Recommend!
I was thinking about other awards and I remembered what I thought about few days ago. I'm an emigrant, born in Poland, living in the UK. One of the things that make me really happy is the fact is that when I turn the telly on first channel is the BBC and when I think of BBC I think of David Attenborough. I can't think of better person to nominee than him. The Man is simply brilliant, his work, his views - all of it. I know that The Duder can't be given to just anyone, but if there's anyone who deserves it it's him. What do you think?
Also, cheers for welcoming. It's really reassuring to know that there's so many decent people on this planet.
Abide, dudes!
What an excellent nomination: I grew up watching David Attenborough - a great broadcaster (hopefully not the last great broadcaster but it's looking that way) - whatever he was involved in, whatever show you were watching you could be assured that it would be high quality, engrossing and not in the least patronizing. He also spoke out against the dumbing down of the BBC before anyone else seemed to notice - Dude's had a rich and utterly fascinating life - so, a life time achievement award or something else that recognizes his well-rounded, fuckin' A humanity? I guess we should add more info on nominees as we go along and then put up polls or what have you. Anyway, good one.
Aye, hopefully he's not the last, that would be a bummer. The thing is apparently people have been talking about dumbing down and the world going down the crapper for as long as they exist (source: QI. Fuck me BBC is good :) ), so there's hope.
So we have had few nominees now, but it looks like there's only one for every category. Since there's not much intrest in it (come on people, or you'll start getting toes in mail!) maybe we should change the nominees into potential winners straight away? On the other hand we can always keep doing it until May or so, who says we have to it now. Being in rush is not very Dudely.
Music- Zac Brown (and band). That dude lives the lifestyle, and his music is very dudely. It seems like in 2010 he just blew up and was everywhere. Songs like "Chicken Fried", "Toes" and "Where the boat leaves from" would totally be on the dudes mix-tape.
For your consideration
Where the boat leaves from- http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=Zj-BRLtp7_s
Toes- http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=eiL_beZtiQc
Chicken Fried- http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=OVA9eEPkhvM
Far out, dude! It dig it man, I really do. And since I don't live in America this is new shit to me, even if he "was everywhere" ;D
Yeah, he's considered "country" music over here (and some of it is VERY country), but thanks to some of his more upbeat stuff like I listed, they got a lot of crossover success on the top 40 radio stations.
I'm guessing even that isn't enough to get country music played outside of the US though!!! ;D
Well, to be honest I never was a fan of country music, but it is sort of popular in Poland, where I come from (http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Piknik_Country) and my parents used to watch it on telly every year. I know nothing about it, so maybe it's only what Poles believe to be country music, but I think they have some performers from the US as well, so maybe it's not all that bad :)
The bottom line is: I think that music composed by people (not computers) and performed using musical instruments will always be better than some fuckin' Lady Gaga or what not. Plus, with Zac Brown you can clearly see that we have intelligent people who know what they want to say and how to say it, not some popopopopoker face, or umbrella ela ela eee eee. That's only, like, may opinion, of course.

Now I don't rate Lady G, but in this one sentence you write off Kraftwerk, 808 State, Jean Michel Jarre, Japan, Joy division, even Mike Oldfield!
Now personally I really quite like these people (Musically that is).
try this for quality:

Well chilled out. (and I'd forgotten about Tomita as well).
Any way I like it.
:P
Mike Oldfield? Come on, dude! He can play more instruments that I can name and composes it all on his own. Rest of them, well maybe except for some Jarre's work, fits to my previous statement. I'd like to make it clear that it's just, like, my opinion, man.
Edit: BTW. My mate used to be a great Oldfield fan and I always pissed him off by saying that Oldfield with his talent and potential should be playing guitar (maybe also something else) in a rock band :) Something like John Paul Jones maybe. He didn't like it at all...
Personally I can deal with any style of music (apart from Country and Western).
Seriously I listen to everything from latin plain chant, through classical to rock, heavy metal, to dance (but dance in a club not at home, I dont see the point of that).
My musical interests are not so broad, although next to rock and heavy metal, which are at the top of my list, I also dig some jazz and classical music. I don't like combining rock and symphonic music, though.
What I really don't like is rap or hip hop (I'm not sure about the difference). Somebody wiser than me told me that it's barely a music, as you should have rhythm and melody (and something else I think) in music, and rap/hip-hop usually has only rhythm. If it has melody it's mostly in chorus and it's stolen from other songs. Again - only my opinion, man. Anybody likes it - I don't mind.
