Title: Really caring
Post by: Robynrainbow on May 30, 2010, 02:17:57 PM
So like, The Dude lives without many possessions, because, like, to not keep the money is to prevent theft, but, there's gotta be some things you really care about, surely the message here is not apathy, or to withstand from relationships?

Like my marmots. Somebody hurts my princess, I will have to be very undude and pacifism will be no more. What's all your opinions on this? Have I got it wrong?

The Dude has money somewhere, otherwise he couldn't live.  He has possessions, he just doesn't have an abundance of possessions like most of us.  The Dude has relationships.  To withstand from relationships, that's a Star Wars "Jedi" concept.  And those guys who believe that they're Jedi's and think that they shouldn't love anybody are not healthy.  As for pacifism, it's a personal choice.  If someone were attacking a family member or a friend or my pet, I would stop them, but with the appropriate response or force in each case.  There are laws and we are governed by them.  There are also moral principles.

Which is not to say that if someone were really violently attacking a family member or friend I wouldn't do everything I could to stop them, but if they were only threatening violence unless I gave them money, like in the Dude's case, I'd give them the money for Heaven's sake!
