An age old conundrum, to be sure, but today I cracked it!
Many of us have wondered why The Dude called Marty something that sounded like Mahty. Knox Harrington (the video artist) also called Maude "Maudie". Sounds just like Mahty. Coincidence? Fuck no!
Watching "The Four Feathers" today they referred to a fella called "The Mahdi"
The reference here is to "Mahdi". Dig it.

Actually compare that with Frank Herberts Muad'Dib from Dune:

But then Dune was always a thinly disguised version of the middle east.
Ya know Meekon, I always knew that the term "Muad 'Dib" had some special significance, but I was too dim to see it. Thankee.
It was only you bringing up the subject that allowed me to make the connection.
I think he calls him "Manny".
But heres something fucking interesting man, the real writer for the TV show, Branded, was not named Arthur Digby Sellers, but actually.....Larry Cohen! He wrote 48 episodes, the bulk of the series.

Different spelling (Cohen and Coen)
Still this is some new shit coming to light. Turns out he's still pretty active.
Wrote the screenplay for some recent flicks.

This is his fifth spec script thriller in the last five years. Phone Booth (2002) was sold in December 1998 in the mid-six figures. "Cast of Characters" for $350,000 and Cellular (2004) for $750,000 were both sold in 1999. "Man Alive" was sold in August 2002 for a mid-six-figure amount. [June 2003]
Not exactly a light weight.
Cohen, Coen, Levite, it's all technically the same. They're all shomer shabbos!
