It's so much easier to clean up a place if you don't have a lot of stuff. And your place just seems neater and more organized. Just keep the essentials. Give away what you don't need or want to the needy or your family and friends and throw away what no one would want.
You're right there Venny! Materialism often leads to an excess of clutter, which does not measure up on the Rén Shui compass!
I pretty much said all I really had to say on the matter in my Dudespaper article: http://dudespaper.com/ren-shui-the-art-of-tying-your-room-together.html/ (http://dudespaper.com/ren-shui-the-art-of-tying-your-room-together.html/).
Strike that perfect balance for easy living!

Exactly! Great article by the way! And cool graph.
I'm sorry but I'm a dedicated Post-Minimalist. I love the piles of junk all around my house.
Yeah, well, I'd love to practice what I preach (not that's it's really preaching, just hypohesising), but I too am in a clutter zone. It doesn't help that I live with a another slob who's big on hording.
Wheat and chaff are two concepts I've not been bothered to explore in a loooong while. So sue me, I'm lazy :)
at first glance, the piles of clothes in my room may look like clutter, but you will soon find out that they are actually comfortable seating

That reminds me of the scene in Ghostbusters II where Peter Venkman comments about his dirty clothes and says something to the effect of, just hang this out the window for ten to fifteen minutes, it'll be good as new. :D
Dudes, amazing topic! Very Christian, very Franciscan... I myself have almost nothing, still I feel like it's too much, so gonna have a big cleanout next week and throw/ give as much shit as posible! Makes your mind easy...
I like how it's left open, you can take that in so many different ways.
You know, it can really free your mind having not a lot of stuff. How many times it happens that you dig trough your stuff and find things you actually forgot! I say: throw 'em away, give 'em to the needy or sell it and give the money to the poor or charity, that would be quite a dude thing to do!
Every religion has this "don't own or get attached to stuff" factor. I think it fits dudeism.

Isn't there another quote something along the lines of there not just being clean and dirty but many grades in between.

Yeah! That's right before he says the other line. Good call.
I , myself, as one entity, have only the bare essentials. My books, a tv/dvd...some kitchen stuff. Photos and momentos are compacted into two large plastic bins, in the closet.
MY TWO KIDS HOWEVER...good Maude above. They've taken over!
stuff is good ;) ;).......personally i think its totally an individual thing......i personally like having stuff because its stuff i like and also if i have lots of stuff then i can share it with my friends

george carlin talking about "stuff"
Some people call it a mess, some people say it's clutter,I say that's just your opinion man.
If I hang something on the floor,it's so's I can find it again when I need it.
Shelves and cupboards are just so damn confusing.By the time I've finished opening all the doors,I've forgotten what the hell I was looking for.
The main reason I own so little is because of laziness... which I am proud of. I don't see the pint of having so much "stuff" anyway. I think the Great Dude, George Carlin, said it best. There are times I honestly don't even want the stuff I need or have now. I hope this way of thinking sticks with me.
I used to have zero stuff, then that got better, but then last few years I have some how gotten a shit load. Now most aint even my stuff, people die, or move away, an being their Dude friend, I end up with it, now I have a small warehouse full of crap to go through.
Having little stuff is definintly the way to go for me, much easier to move around for one thing. Also these days when I finish a book or something I don't really feel like I gotta hang onto it or anything, its more satisfying to pass it on in the knowledge that someone else might get some enjoyment out of it.

Hey Mu! Welcome to our nice quiet beach community! 8)
Yeah, welcome Mu - are you justified and ancient? ;D
Cake I'm sure that was Justified Ancients of Mu Mu.
Ah, yeah - I always tend to go a Mu too far ;D
What did a wise dude once say? ...........
"Posses possessions, possessed."
Disclaimer: That does not, by the way, include my wide screen 50 inch LCD Sony Aquos TV, sound system, viewing room, or my prized collection of TBL DVDs included the most recent special edition. ;D Those do not count.
Cheers for the welcomes dudes! Skipping down to the south of Ireland soon to a place called Kerry for a month . Full of forests, mountains, loads of wildlife...a ridiculous amount of tasty mushrooms also grow there in the right season...so many you couldn't possibly stop them no matter how much of a fascist you were...great place for a simple kind of man to meet like- minded dudes :D
Sounds grand, been to Eire a few times (my Mother was Irish - still family there) but have never really traveled around, at all (just Carrigallen in Co. Lietrim). Sounds as if you are gonna have a very Dudely time. ;D
Here you go dudes!
