Post by: Das Nihilist on October 06, 2007, 08:45:12 PM

WhereTH comes "I am the walrus" and HowTF can be put together with any Lenin reference?

I am the walrus...words from a Beatles song co-written by John Lennon...

Vladimir Lenin (AKA; Vladimir Ilyich Ulyanov)...Marxists, Bolshevik, leader in the 1917 Russian Revolution...

Walter and the dude commenting on Vladimir Lenin in the "look who benefits" conversation where space cadet Donnie has John Lennon and Vladimir Lenin confused when he injects "I am the walrus" into Walter and the dude's conversation and is told by Walter to Shut the fuck up, Donnie, Vladimir Ilyich Ulyanov!! Walter was correcting Donnie's confusion of the two Lenins / Lenons.

Donnie has John Lennon and Vladimir Lenin confused

Zat's it -fuckin' A, man!- zaanx, zat's zee connection I missed -forgot 'bout the Beatles song-...

Now, there's new shit vee can't figure out: Donnie's automatic connection between the subject of the conversation -"look who benefits"- with ZAT specific Lennon song...
after some very deep research -veekipedia, btw- it comes to light that the original "walrus" reference came from Lewis Carroll's poem "The Walrus and the Carpenter", wich actually seems to argue about economic systems and imperialistic manners of capitalism -who knows, actually-, but Lennon stated that he had no clue about that at the time he wrote the song, and there ain't no such "benefit" reference in the lyrics so... do you figure out the mental inner process that makes Donnie guess that The Dude was trying to quote "I am the walrus"?
Since we learn quiet little shit of Donnie in the movie, I'm afraid the mistery remains just half-solved for me, except if you can bring some more shit to light... would you? uh, man?

Anyway, zanx fot zee fast answer man, if feel now less like a child, who wanders in the middle of the movie...

Personally speaking I have NO idea what the relationship between the walrus and Mr. Lennin is but it sounds a bit kinky.  :o

if you read the lyrics to "I am the Walrus" you will see that they make absolutely no sense. so I think that by mentioning this beatles' song, Donnie wants to point out that the conversation about Lenin made no sense. to him at least...

I would like to say thanks for clearing up that question regarding the names of Mssr's/ Lenin and Lennon. I felt that you hit the proverbial nail on the head with that explanation.

Somehow in the parlance of our times, most Dudelike beings, don't explain the the whole picture without a pause for a J, and then forgetting what the topic of conversation was.

So far out. Far fuckin' out...

What was I saying?

here's the deal with lyrics by john lennon, especially in the song I am the Walrus (and arguably many of the songs on magical mystery tour):  school teachers were having their students study beatles lyrics, to look for poetic meanings and all that.  lennon heard about this going on, and when they recorded MMT he wrote lyrics that made no sense as to confuse teachers and students alike when they were interpreting beatle's lyrics in school  :P

I just came across this great article, "Exploring Capitalism Through the Lens of the Big Lebowski." Not having seen it anywhere else on the board, I'm thinking that this thread is as good a place as any to post it. It places the Walrus reference--as well as the role of every major character--within the politico-economic dynamics of capitalism:
