Rev.Wendy aka The Dude a-Rides

Does anybody happen to have any idea of how The Dude makes any dollars...bones, clams, whatever you call them?

I'm guessing as an ex hippie he probably sells home made soap and mix tapes on Venice Beach during the bowling off season. His stint as an anti-capitalist radical during the drafting of the Port Huron statement probably endowed him with a healthy mistrust of government and paper money- my best guess is that he may have taken out huge student loans in the 60's, invested it all in gold and Thai sticks, dropped out, dealt out and saved some of the Thai stick  earnings, and sells off the gold as needed at various local pawn shops.

Or it might be that he just works some months a year. I knew a man who worked six months and then traveled the other six around the world. Nice way of living if you don't have a family. But sufidude is right, probably he has some kind of activity down to Venice Beach. Or helps Walter in the shop.
Yeah well, that's just, ya know, like, your opinion, man.

I always figured he has some meal ticket. Like an insurance settlement or
something. That would be very dude. Not rich. Just enough to keep him
in half and half.

Out here we are all his children

As a financial aid sucking university student, you're welcome.

In an early version of the screenplay the Dude was the heir to the Rubik's cube fortune, which is another anomaly since the dude who invented the R/cube was Czechoslovakian and as such was not protected by patent law so his cube was copied and ripped off by many manufacturers.

I like to think that the Dude tends a little pot patch somewhere in the Laurel Canyon hills. Weed can be a costly indulgence for an unemployed dude.

I guess he has a strict "job" regimen, working each year as much as needed and then enjoying himself the rest of the time. Like working six months only. At the end he has a little monkey to feed. And I guess also that Walter gives him something to do too, sometimes.
