...Ugh... Okay, this was a real Walter coffee shop moment.

I'm working overnights now, Dudes. And sometimes after particularly difficult shifts I like to get dinner and a brewsky and well the only place you can get anything resembling a hot meal that early that isn't eggs is the local 711. 5 dollars gets you a pizza thats... pretty decent for 5 dollars. anyway.

I've lived in my county all my life. I worked in grocery retail for the past 10 years. We don't really have rules regarding when to sell Beer. NY is pretty liberal in that regard. And I've never been denied the sale of Beer before on the grounds of it being too early.

Suffice to say, the cabinet is locked. And I've had a rough night, so I'm kinda cranky. I ask the clerk to open the cabinet, he says he can't. He says he's been informed by the local Pastor (the church is like two doors down) they can't sell beer on a Sunday cause it's a holy day and blah blah blah.

And I didn't take it out on the counter worker, but oh I was livid. People did not die face down in the muck so that this human paraquat! This Reactionary can come in to the 711 and tell me I when I can have alcohol cause of his faith. The clerk was even like, I could just go to the place on the corner but at that point just getting the beer wasn't the goal.

THIS WAS ABOUT WHAT AFFECTS ALL OF US MAN! OUR BASIC FREEDOMS!

So I went home, beer and pizza-less. I got on the internet, found an email to that fucking church and...

wrote a relatively very nice respectful, rational note and sent it off. Hell I don't even know if it was that church, and I said as much in the email, just geographically it's right next to it. The pastor wrote and email back, but I just deleted. Fuck it man. I'm very fortunate that years of writing on message boards have taught me to be able to express my thoughts while still maintaining the attempt of pacifism.

I even emailed the 711 corp. I was that guy. Ugh, but I gotta tell you, in that moment I was really ticked off. Even now I'm thinking, Law or no law, who the hell is ANYONE to tell me when I can I drink? I'm almost 30 for christ sakes. BASIC FREEDOMS, am I wrong?

Well I regret sending the email to that church, there was no point in it beyond just venting. Stupidest thing to get angry about, very undude.

These strumpets!
It's a mind set.
Believing it's perfectly fine to tell others how they should live.

Purely dehumanizing bullshit.
It doesn't matter to the Jesus.

Laughable man! I'd fuck them in the ass on Sunday!
They got a date on Sunday baby!

Yep. It's hubris for someone to dictate what you can and can't do because of THEIR faith.

You don't see me running around telling people they can't eat tuna sandwiches because I don't like them.

Just to fuck with his head make a giant pentagram on the lawn of the church.
Probably will send the entire town into conniptions.
These people don't believe in nothing.

It turns out, there are liqour time laws in suffolk county, but for the life of me I've never seen this enforced anywhere... So it really comes off to me as a real "I can get you in trouble with the state if you don't" type deal.

Whatever. Actually got kinda a jerk response from 711 as well. Fuck it, I just discovered Speedway. Suppose I'll get my daily fountain soda there now, and earn points to boot.

ahhhhh such a stupid thing to be annoyed over but still... BASIC FREEDOMS! And I'm not moving away, I'm staying! Enjoyin' my fountain soda.

I worked from Friday night at 10:00 to Saturday morning @ 6:30am, same on Saturday night, Sunday, Monday, and Tuesday nights for 6 years... A very cranky dude I was when a local LEO followed me to work the one Saturday night... He must've thought I was going to break in or something. The following morning after a very bad night I wanted a shot of something at what I thought was an open bar/ tavern.  They were serving some kind of charity breakfast for 20.00, one small pancake, a piece of cold toast, no coffee or juice, and no alcohol served.
Needless to say I went home angry and wrote along letter to that bar owner, after not eating or ordering their poor excuse for a charitable cause.  I tore it up as small as I could get the 3 pages of angry ranting!  sometimes we just need to vent our frustrations out.

I had a very similar encounter at a local gas station just the other day, I also work midnights and like you I enjoy the occasional oat soda after a long day. This last Sunday morning I stopped at my usual spot on the way home to find that the beer was all locked up, since I go there all the time in the morning with the soul purpose getting beer I didn't think much of it and asked the clerk to unlock it. Nope they don't sell booze until the late morning on Sundays since church is going on...What the hell does one have to do with the other? its not like people are going to see the beer cooler is locked and just decide to go to church instead. Craziness I tell ya! I THOUGHT THIS WAS AMERICA!...is what I wanted to start shouting but instead I mumbled something about bullshit under my breath and went home sober. It's a cruel world sometimes.

My BF (for the past 10 years) works at a 711 and we're in NY state, but he says there's no Blue Law as far as day of the week. That just recently changed though, so it could have changed after you had this frustrating experience. Right now in the county we live in, there's no sale of alcohol after 2:00 a.m. or before 9:00 a.m., no matter what day of the week. We're near Buffalo, if that helps.

Quote5 dollars gets you a pizza thats... pretty decent for 5 dollars. anyway.

If you get pie from 711 again, my boyfriend tried a trick - get a cheese pizza and before you bake it, spread picco de gallo and chili over it. Then have it baked for an extra 30 seconds over the regular time to brown the chili and picco spread. It's the best "taco" pizza I've had from a gas station in a while.

I never understood laws like this...

Seriously... any drunk worthy of the name will stock up by 1:59am

It also discriminates against 3rd shift workers...  When I lived in Idaho, there was no such law... my workweek ended on Sunday morning at 7am, and sometimes we'd get a few beers after work (it was Friday night to us)

Loco man.

I can't imagine how it felt when all those reactionaries got together to pen prohibition.  Seriously?  You're gonna tell the entire country, all ages and creeds, they can't ever have a drink ever??  Because YOU blame it for all the problems in the country?  And now there's miles and miles of red tape and taxes just to get a legal brew as an adult... jacking the prices up to stupid levels for anything that won't taste like ass, hoppy water, or rot the guts.

Never changes... fucking nazis...

Eh, fuck it dude.

Liam_123

That's ridiculous dude. If a man wants a beer, give the man his beer and carry on, regardless of the time of day or day of the week. Freedom isn't free anymore, there is always one person or multiple people that want to control even our smallest of freedoms. And it always seems like it the same 2 groups of people who like to control the rest of us: 1 being the government and 2 being the church. But again if a man wants a beer give him his damn beer. Nobody's going to tell me not to drink at 6 in the morning, I'm a grown ass man and if I feel like a beer at 6 in the morning I will have a beer at 6 in the morning.

And end rant.

The US was founded as a puritanical nation. Too many remnants of this survive. It's embarrassing, counter-productive, and unethical. We should be ashamed. Instead, we laud praise on all the cops, prosecutors, judges, legislators, and executives that participate in this fuckfest.

Aww hell... this whole time I thought the US was founded as a SECULAR nation... ya know, separation of church and state... not a christianized sharia law

Fuck it... I'll buy my beer at 1:57am just to be safe
