I know the dude loved his burgers, but in an effort to be less of a dick to animals I've been vegan for the last year. I'm digging it and find it really ties my dudeist practice together.

I personally don't think that living close to the natural order is being unkind.
But of course the way we raise cattle and chickens and what have you can be horrible.
To that end I prefer venison when I can get it.

IMO there is a balance in nature that includes predator and pray. We are supposed to be a part of that.
The sin is that we have no regard for that balance. This is responsible for so many problems.
We have no problem with creating giant cities that are incapable of feeding themselves with the available local resources. We maintain them by having huge industrial farms and highways to carry supplies on and on and on. The wholesale devastation of entire areas. If we lived in balance with the natural environment that would not be possible. The population would have to strike a balance with the natural environment. That would be very Dude indeed IMO.

space truckers square pigs (the next stage)

and I have to agree with BD I like a bit of venison now and again.

Too fond of the taste of dead flesh, dead rotting carcass according to a veggy associate of mine (technically correct because most meat has to be "hung" to mature it for a bit).

I tried it for like a week. Once I learned that you're not even supposed to eat cheese either, I was like fuck that! I also tried semi vegetarianizm or whatever, where you just eat veggies and fish only, or chicken and eggs or some shit. But by the time the holidays come around I'm eating pork shoulder almost every week. I just try to stay away from the heavily processed meats if possible.
One who is a Dude must before all things keep constantly in mind...the fact that he has to take it easy.

As a diabetic I have to watch my diet but once a month I'm there cheese fest (my special treat)!

Do you Brits get Oka cheese over there?  OMFG...  M5, you'd love it.  SWMBO is a brit, and can't get enough.

(SWMBO = "she who must be obeyed")   ;-)

(actually originally from the film She, but then used a lot in Rumpole of the Bailey)

Good cheese is one of the great things in life.
Typically the wife and I take a trip to Vermont in March and one of the things we do is visit a particular cheese shop. Very great locally made cheeses. I stock up.

That has my mouth watering just looking at it.

Myself no. I believe we are top of the food chain and meat tastes GOOD!
I understand the be kind to animals angle however as I too love and respect animals. I do believe they should be treated with respect, even if they're raised for food. They should also be slaughtered in a humane manner.
Look at how the native Americans did it- by thanking the animal and celebrating its life.

I understand vegetarianism but what I don't and will never get is veganism. No eggs, no milk, no cheese??? Animals aren't killed for these! And I don't want to hear "the animals are mistreated in harvesting milk, eggs, etc". I'm sure it happens here and there but think about it- if the animals aren't happy and healthy they aren't going to produce a good product so why would farmers mistreat their livelihood? It's ludicrous.

I have a vegan friend who preached that all the time and ate all this fake crap like imitation cheese and meats... This same friend is also the sickliest person I know and looks terrible. That fake shit is loaded with chemicals and other garbage, so the "it's a healthier way to eat" angle is pure nonsense as well.

I personally love food and take pride in cooking using fresh, quality ingredients in my meals. It's a nice feeling knowing it is a good meal without a bunch of preservatives and chemicals.

But dude, if you like being a vegan go for it. Not telling you it's wrong, this is just like my opinion man.
"Is this a... what day is this???"

BikerDude

Exactly!
If we were not intended to eat critters they wouldn't  taste so good fried in butter and smothered in shrooms, onions and gravy.
Or roasted over red hot coals and slathered with BBQ sauce.
Or slow braised in wine and herbs with root vegetables.

Personally I have never given more than a passing thought to how the beef or chicken happens to find its way to my table. It's just a cultural thing to me. We eat meat and vegetables and tubers and so forth and that's the way I was brought up. My parents ate meat and their parents and yadda, yadda, yadda.
That being said there are definite health benefits to veganism. A couple of years ago I went on a vegan diet for 4 months from September through December inclusive. This was in the days when my employer conducted annual health screenings of all the employees which included blood work. One year in December (my birth month) I did my blood work and the results were within the established parameters for cholesterol and triglycerides but toward the high end. The following year I went vegan at the beginning of September and then got my blood work done at the end of December. My HDL went up, my LDL went down, and my triglycerides were cut in half. Triglycerides are the amount of fat that circulates in the blood stream and if it's high enough it is actually visible in a blood draw or when emptying a drain.
So the meat eating thing is, for me, a cultural thing which I have never felt sufficient need to alter in my life but the vegan diet is definitely healthier if the person is concerned with blood chemistry and the potential health implications.

Zero

Vegans always seem to look pale, weak and under-nourished. It seems to me that its an extreme. I did explore it once. Read "Vegetarian Myth" by Lierre Keith. She was a vegan for a long time and for all the right reasons, but in the end she discovered that the whole concept was flawed. Even plants need death to survive. Goes hand in hand with accepting the cycle of life and nature.

I try to eat moderately and follow the adage "you are what you eat ate". By buying locally produced meats and produce you can seek out farmers that still grow things without steroids or chemicals.

Ribeye is just too damn good to deny ones self...
