Siskel & Ebert review of the Holy Film

Siskel didn't think much of it, but Ebert thought it was alright

As i recall, Siskel gave it a right panning...but then he also had a brain tumor in his head, that he died of shortly thereafter, so I'm inclined to give him a pass.  If his mind was healthy and limber enough, he probably would have enjoyed it.

Ebert was underwhelmed but still appreciated it.  Remember, it's only after successive viewings that most of us really dug it.  Ebert and the other critics probably don't have time to watch a movie more than once.  They are forced to watch to general swill that Hollywood shits out and then they have deadlines to meet.  Film criticism is a JOB, sir!

That's fucking interesting man. A classic film is one that has withstood the test of time, so watching a film only once can be no indication of its greatness within the whole durned human comedy.

The repeated telling of stories is how history perpetuates.
