A Giant, Mysterious Hole Has Opened up

The massive hole, about 260 feet wide, is located in the Yamal peninsula and can easily fit several helicopters inside the entrance, according to the U.K.'s Independent. It is believed to be about two years old, RT.com reported.

The area's name, Yamal, translates to "end of the world" and is home to some of Russia's largest gas reserves.

I'll give the analysis I gave on another forum:

There's ejecta so it's not a normal sink hole.

The ejecta doesn't go far away and there's no rays, so there was no explosion.

There's what looks like a dry creek running away from it.

So... I'm guessing it was something like a salt dome that pushed up through the surface, then developed a crack and had water run out forming that creek bed.  At some point it collapsed in on itself leaving the sink hole.

Or, a UFO landed there.

So for once scientists are fairly unanimous in the fact that they don't know what it is or how it happened.

Not really an area I know much about but that does sound feasible, but without actually being there and seeing it first hand difficult to say. I bow to your greater background in geology my experience stopped at "O" Level.

It was aliens; they were digging holes looking for material to build yet another great pyramid, and to stash the evidence that they had crashed at Roswell, NM, fucking up William Brazel's ranch. The stupid bastards flew all the way across space, and due to drinking too much galactic mega beer (aka; a Pan Galactic Gargle Blaster), plowed their cheaply knocked up flying saucer thingie right into the desert at warp speed creating another god damn sink hole!
