HIPPIES - full doc

One comment... You guys who didn't live through this period are not qualified to comment upon it. It's easy to criticize, and easy to confuse the style with the reality. We rejected the postwar straitjacket conformist conservatism of the late 50's and early 60's, and tried to create a viable alternative future.

And you should try to think beyond the prevailing group-think too. Think beyond the planet-poisoning, commercial warfare paradigm we are held by now. Create the freedom and possibilities of the future.

It's a very good point though.

When I went back to university I was appalled by the complete apathy of the student body.

People really don't care.

It doesn't really matter though all we are going to do is destroy that little envelope in which we as humans can exist in. Once that is done the world will roll over and some other animal will climb up to the top of the food chain either by intelligence or by having bigger teeth, faster nastier reactions.

Won't be the first time (see under dinosaurs) won't be the last.

There was a resurgence (at least here in America/Southern California) of the hippy movement during the 80's, but this time with a "New Age" twist to it. No where near as much emphasis on drugs such as Acid (lots of Hemp, though) or rebellion against society or "the system." It sort of phased out by the end of the 90's, but was very interesting to see happen. After that, the "new hippy" became computer geeks, which is not surprising because much of the computer and internet technologies we enjoy and use today was developed by hippies in the 60's and 70's like these guys...
