what was the metaphor when the dude said he hated the eagles and then the driver got mad?

is it just a general point about cognitive dissonance on the part of the taxi driver?

DigitalBuddha

Intolerance on the part of the taxi driver? A metaphor of Intolerance? That's just like my opinion, man.

Problems with communication are a constant theme in the film. Just like in life (and sometimes on this forum) everybody wants to be heard and nobody wants to listen.
e.g. "'vagina' does the word make you uncomfortable?" clearly this is Maude's issue not the Dude's. He is entirely comfortable with vaginas. The whole Lenin - I am the Walrus thing and most other Walter, Donny, Dude trialogues are complete miscommunication. Maybe this is the message - that people don't give a fuck about anybody else (with the exception of the Dude) and won't use their ears. Which is why so many people will pay a lot of money for the undivided attention of a professional therapist. A lot of people talk about the 'authenticity' of the dude as his key characteristic and that is true in the outward-facing, expressive part of his persona. But the receptive, yin vibe of the dude is at least as important. He is unusually accepting of all sorts of people, he cares (in comical contrast to Walter) and he looks beneath the spin (for example of achievement) to see the person underneath. I think we intuitively sense that by being less selfish than all the other characters (including the taxi driver) the Dude is also more appealing and attractive as a human being and that's a big part of why we want to find that dude-like quality in ourselves.

That's fucking interesting man, that's fucking interesting...

Or perhaps the Dude simply has great musical taste, because the Eagles do lick the left one.

Either that or he's stoned and finds the entire exercise exhausting.
Just takes whatever comes. He may be philosophizing or just without any discernible philosophy at all rolling with pretty much anything. Slackerdom. Say what you like about the tenets of National Socialism, Dude, at least it's an ethos.
But of course that's why he ties the room together. He accepts Donnie and Walter and Smokey and Maude and Jackie and .....

Personally I think it was just supposed to be funny and interesting in the Cab.
An unusual and somewhat strange character in a likewise unusual cast of characters.
A black guy in a fez with a serious love for the Eagles. Wow! Only in LA.
