Pope aborts mission

The imminent departure of pope Benny made me consider what I would change if I were pope. And a little strangely (as I'm agnostic and morally liberal) I realised that I wouldn't be in any rush to change the catholic opposition to abortion. The legal position in most secular western countries is that a foetus is entirely at the mercy of its mother until a point vaguely associated with its viability outside of the uterus. Suddenly after that point it is a human with the full protection of the law behind it. God knows I'm not saying this is a simple issue - it's incredible complex and difficult. But this artificial moral over-simplification doesn't help. Human foetal developement is clearly progressive but legal protection does not reflect this. Also if we are going to use the argument that certain foetuses aren't quite human enough to be protected from the wish of the mother to kill them then why not extend the same moral position to enforced euthanasia for people who are severly handicapped or perhaps a programme of eugenics?
