I've noticed that this particular corner of the dude-site is getting a little dusty. Nothing wrong with the whole transcendentalism thing but maybe it could be replaced with something a little more current to include the American personal growth-new age spirituality vibe?

Lots of groovy dudes come into this nomenclature like: Steve Levine, Susan Jeffers, Byron Katie, Greg Baer, Michael Beckworth, Harville Hendrix, Jake Eagle, Eckhart Tolle, Ram Das, Marianne Williamson, Diana Richardson etc' etc'

Ram Das' Be Here Now is a pretty groovy book.

I get kinda leary of New-Age spirituality types like Eckhart Tolle. I fear they're only rehashing what others have cooked up before and ripping them off, though I don't propose any of the writers you've mentioned have done that, and when they become a Harpo Production I definitely stop, drop and roll (lookin' atchou, Deepak Chopra!)
Well, that's your perception.

I dig Werner Erhard. Luke Rhinehart wrote a great book on est. It can be a little Undude in practice sometimes, but the basic idea is that enlightenment is taking what you get. That's pretty dude.

It would be interesting to see how New Age concepts could fit into Dudeism, mang. In the 80's a lot of New Agers were in fact about the Dude's age in TBL and came from similar backgrounds.

8) So that brings up the question; can a dude mediate and get into the whole New Age thing with sound tracks from a favorite bowling session?........

Masked Dude

Sure. The idea of saying something like "om" during meditation is just to focus one's mind on a peaceful note. The dude loved the rolling thunder of the ball and the subtle crash of pins. It's like some dudes meditate to waves or birds or their own breath. I say bowling sounds are just another auditory Om some love.

Don't make me break the science behind sound, focus, brainwaves, and meditation. :)

I believe that the universe ebbs and flows, you know, like a tug of war between positive and negative positions. Think of it as the universe breathing in and out. New Ageism is a natural counterpoint to spiritual contemporary conservatism and having one implies the other. So here we are with a new label for the same ol' thing. I personally find 99.9% of it cheesy and self-serving, but who the fuck am I to tell someone else that? People have always found ways to profit off one another. It's just the universe doing it's thing I guess.
