Been there and done that.

At one point I was using real mud mixed with glue and paint on my dioramas.

I used to have a set of six samurai that I had hand painted. To finish them properly I had to use a brush that had only two hairs on it.

I have a cousin who still talks about those samurai now, they were one of the reasons he got into role playing, after talking with me and seeing those samurai.

Real mud? That's a great idea! Sounds like it would look very realistic. Two hairs sounds like it would take a long time to paint, but worth the effort I bet.

You have to be careful with real mud because of the scale effect. If your painting 00 scale real mud can be used for large bits of terrain, as you move up (or is it down) the scale factors to 1/72 scale the look changes slightly (but then who hasn't used their 00 scale train and filled it with 1/72 scale soldiers for those huge realistic train smashes). Once you get into 1/32 scale mud becomes more realistic as mud. Nothing better than base painting a few shades and splodges of grey and brown then mixing in some real mud to create that fully trodden battle field look.

As for the two hair brush, it's mostly used for eye brows and very small detail

Shame I lost mine because I just found this "ARMY : Samurai Warriors"

Seems there where eight in the kit after all (I only remember having six, must have lost two on the way).

Sound kind of interesting, but I think I would rather get in to 1/1 scale models. I think it would be harder to be frustrated over my mistakes. :D
