MONTREAL - A series of heartwrenching text messages is being used by the boyfriend of a car accident victim to warn people to pay attention when driving.

Mathieu Fortin has created a Facebook page to get the word out in memory of Emy Brochu, who died Jan. 18 when her car slammed into the back of a tractor-trailer truck as it merged with traffic near Victoriaville, Que.

Not to sound callous but this has risen to a level of Darwin award proportions.
I drive the highway my daily commute.
At one exit traffic always slows and with no exaggeration I'd say 2 or 3 days out of the 5 there is a rear ender at that exit.
Seems like it's always a gen z type of car. Little Civic or Kia just plows right into the ass end of the car in front of them
I'm pretty confident it's texting.
I pass cars on my bike and glance over and kids drive the whole commute while texting. 
Or tweeting or whatever.
Information super highway. Remember how they used to say that?

It is not possible to make a LASTING compromise between technology and freedom, because technology is by far the more powerful social force and continually encroaches on freedom through REPEATED compromises. When a new item of technology is introduced as an option that an individual can accept or not as he chooses, it does not necessarily REMAIN optional. In many cases the new technology changes society in such a way that people eventually find themselves FORCED to use it.

And then you are left with zombies crashing their cars into the ass end of semi trailers.
Patch them up put them back in the drivers seat and chances are they will stick their mug right back into the phone screen and continue to babble inanely. I have to assume that being constantly "in touch" in the social contest that these creatures occupy has become not optional. Or at least perceived as not optional. The consequences of disconnecting are bad. What constitutes truth has gone up for grabs. And you've gotta constantly stick your foot in the door or it swings shut. So we get this sort of thing.

Ya know, having these devices that can send a text message to another person is a great thing. Wouldn't it be great, though, if someone could invent a device that would allow one person to speak to another person some distance away, kinda like the walkie talkies that you see in the movies about WW2, only smaller? Perhaps even pocket size?
