This was one of the first aircraft I ever worked on operationally and the first I ever flew in as a serviceman....from RAF Lossiemouth to USAFB Keflavick in Iceland in 1981.

We went there for a day trip, supporting our Air defence Phantoms (the lump under the nose hides the AN/APS20 Early Warning Radar)...Radar being my speciality at the time.

I was assigned to make sure it behaved. This was fairly difficult as the average flight time of a Shackleton was 8 hours and the average serviceability of the aforementioned radar was about 40 minutes.

Our trip lasted 6 days...due to horizontal rain and an unserviceable navigator.

At the time as a young airman I was being paid 205 pounds per month...due to the local allowances I received whilst stationed there I was given an extra 160 quid for those six days plus an unspecified amount of beer and all the food I could I eat....

Happy days. And what a machine.

Peace and ridiculous aircraft noise to you all... ;)
Love is like a butterfly it goes where it pleases and it pleases where it goes. :)

Way cool, groovypucks!! I was at a local air show at a community airport a few years ago and they had a wing of the Confederate Air Force fly in with a few fighters, a fly-over of a B-17, and a few other cool stuff like a P-58. Fabulous stuff, man!!
