I definitely think that "Hansel" from the 2001 movie Zoolander is the perfect example of dude. He shows that being male model of the year doesn't impede on his mindset of constant chill and living life how he wants.

Don't know if It's been said, but I would nominate Eckhart Tolle as a Great Dude In History.   Eckhart is one of the greatest laid back Dudes of our time (author of A New Earth & The Power of Now).  A spiritual person who is not affiliated with any religion, doesn't have a religion, he has gained millions of followers, and his books have been translated into 34 different languages.  Not only is he all about Takin' it easy, in his great relaxed efforts to show people how to do the same; he's not at all worried as to whether or not people will wake up to this important principle of life.  Strikes or gutter balls, he's perfectly content either way.

I second the nomination of the Beatles but only John, George, and Ringo.  Paul would have to be a "Dudas Iscariot" for selling out to money and bad pop music.  A wolf in Dudes clothing...

Anthony de Mello, a Jesuit priest from India, influenced the world through his powerful understanding of the human condition. The depth and spiritual insight in his teachings, stories and articles made him well known throughout the world. He is well appreciated by many inside and outside the Roman Catholic Church.

His teachings were temporarily banned within the Roman Catholic Church by then future pope Ratsinger, but the ban has been lifted. Catholics are still advised to avoid his writings though. It is good to be reminded occasionally that the Roman Catholic Church still has a blacklist, where mystics can get their work listed.

Alan Ginsberg, William S. Burroughs, and Tom Waits! Especially Tom Waits!

I saw Alan Ginsberg read his poetry in Los Angeles years ago and he read this one epic poem, the refrain of which was:

"Don't smoke! Don't smoke! Don't smoke! Don't smoke! Smoke dope! Smoke dope! Smoke dope! Smoke dope!"

He was very dude, very cool, and also very Zen.

And Tom Waits both for his hobo-inspired music and persona and his laid-back dudeness.

Also, Ted (of "Bill and Ted's Excellent Adventure").

Oh, and this guy named Tex who is the lead singer for a band called the Groovy Rednecks. He epitomizes dudeism...
