What does Dudeism mean to you?

What does Dudeism mean to you? What is your basic and everyday philosophy of Dudeism. On a personal note; how do you live the abiding life?

It's funny... Being ordained here wasn't my first ordination. I have to admit, though, that I'm pretty sure it's my favorite one.

Dudeism to me really embodies the "That's just like your opinion, man" ideal. Sure, we all have the good guy, the asshole, the Donny, the jackass, the saint, all that in us. But overall we have to remember that everyone has an opinion whether we like it or not.

We have no control what others think or feel. We can only control how we react. Sure, we could pick up a gun like Walter (yeah, I started to watch part of the movie but didn't get time to finish) but the Dude just says to abide. That's what we have to do. Go ahead and let your inner Walter scream and shout and want to get someone, but outwardly let your Dude take charge.

To me, dudeism says do what feels good, don't hurt others, but don't let them piss on your rug, either. Know when to abide and know when to yell.

I don't do shouting and I'm clearly tired of yelling.

Yah see... in the Military and when you're 16 and impressionable...shouting seems to get one's attention! So one gets scared and compliant, just in case the shouty one gets violent, which happens a lot...just like it did at home.

So you comply and become a good soldier and do as you are told, just like you did at home.

Then you become a big soldier and are expected to follow a pattern...but by that time you've become a parent...and are definitely not into patterns.

I could never understand why a man in a peaked cap which was covering his eyes was pushing his face an inch from mine and then yelling at me "Are you fucking stupid Airman?"

I obviously couldn't answer him immediately...sorta detrimental to my career if you understand! But my inner thoughts were always "shit dude, when I leave here the course I'm going to be put through will cost the taxpayer more than you will ever make in your lifetime"

So fuck the yelling...start the listening....in fact...enjoy the yelling...) cos the the guys that are yelling are just angry. The reason won't be you for sure! (unless you provoked em!)

My partner used to say to me in times of stress and strife "I always feel so calm with you, how do you do this?!" I would reply in a somewhat flippant manner " It's not what I do, it's how I am, I love you now let's carry on lady!"

Let's abide dudes...no need for shouting...

Recruits are like rough clay.Individual lumps have to be molded together as a potter beats clay to make a form he can work with.Drill sergeants are like the potters initial work.Different cultures have different methods of course.I think the French Foreign Legion is probably the most extreme.But they are working with a diverse product.Some of the calmest,self assured and confident people I have come across are ex military.They are not all Walters.

Zen Dog, you pretty much nailed it.  Ex military guys aren't all Walters but a lot of us still are.  And that's my biggest struggle and why I am glad I found my way here.  It's helped me to become more centered and less of a prick.  Helps me see the world through the mindset of "I don't have time to be worried about that shit".  Because at the end of the day I have to keep my self calm and grounded.  If I'm upright all the time I probably won't live that long.  That's not in my game plan.
