"Now he has departed from this strange world a little ahead of me. That means
nothing. People like us, who believe in physics, know that the distinction
between past, present, and future is only a stubbornly persistent illusion."

Letter to the family of his lifelong friend Michele Besso, after learning of his
death, (March 1955) as quoted in Science and the Search for God Disturbing the
Universe (1979) by Freeman Dyson Ch. 17 "A Distant Mirror" ; also quoted at
Einstein's God (NPR)

"?.People like us, who believe in physics, know that the distinction between past,
present, and future is only a stubbornly persistent illusion."
Into:
"Reality is merely an illusion, albeit a very persistent one."

Could this be the source of the now infamous quote??
Someone taking "past, present and future" and translating it into "Reality"?
But without a source, we may never know.

Somewhere he also says space and time are necessary illusions.  The notion of a necessary illusion is particularly intriguing.  If it is truly necessary, is it not then real?  Also, what's necessarily wrong with illusions to begin with?  Perhaps we just misunderstand the illusive.
