I think laughing *should* be central to Dudeism, but as far as this dude can tell, it's not part of the ethos. So far as I can tell anyways. I see lotsa laughing at Lebowskifests, in pictures, "how they made the movie" reels, etc... the Coen brothers loose it at certain times... but no one has mentioned it as an essential part of being a dude.  Is this because it is *excluded* as part of the Dudeism ethos?

Watcha think? Do we take ourselves too seriously, cause if we do, that's a real bummer man.  I think it's a legit question.

Or, you know, just throw a coffee cup at me...

I don't disagree at all.

That's because you can't hear the sound of the bells in our hats over a text based forum.

You may have missed this from here (previous discussion):

The fool that begins to take themselves too seriously just becomes another idiot in the crowd.

This is what I fear we are doing now.

We should get over ourselves.

So the bigger religions are picking on us because we are the new kid in the playground.

Fuck them (and the Atheists)!

From my point of view we had forgotten a fundamental principle of what we are.

We are the essential fool in the court that stands up when no-one else will and tells the king he's wrong.

The more they laugh at us the more we should play the fool. We are they holy idiots who exist to point out how silly the other religions are being by being sillier ourselves.

Admittedly I do see the arguments that at times we do appear to be a bit anti-christian, and perhaps we may start to expand some of our terminology to include things like Dudmitzvahs. It is difficult being in christian western society the first point of our venom tends to focus on christianity.

I think the fundamental problem may be you can't hear anyone laughing in text.

Yes there are some pretty heavy serious discussions going on but don't let that fool you, as I had to explain to "The Godson From Hell", it's easy to tell when I'm taking the piss, my lips move.

Ya, I get the forum/text limitation, I've been frequenting forums since the days of FidoNet. (Pre-Internet). But to clarify, I was referring to the movie itself. The emotional texture of TBL is rather dark, punctuated with the Dude's Zen moments. I thought that an inclusion of fucking massive belly-laugh humour into Dudeism would be a great thing to like, you know - round it out. The only characters who at least *smile* a little bit without any malicious intent are the Stranger, and the Dude when he's partaking.

Maybe it's just me. I adore Dudism as a way of life, and I also appreciate piss-yer-pants humour as a de-stressing thing.

My thoughts, not yours...

I see what your saying, but I think my point still stands.

Yes a good belly laugh is a pleasant relief now and then, I think the humour is rather understated in the film.

The same here on the forum, a lot of the posts are actually very funny.

A number of threads here disappeared into "Is the Dude Gay?" type logic which is too much analysis.

I think what I'm trying to say is the belly laugh of Dudeism is here on the forum.

You could put more "prat falls" and custard pies into the film but I think the humor comes from the plausibility of the situation even if it is ridiculous.

The idea being the Coen brothers holding a mirror to ourselves for us to laugh at ourselves.

I remember doing this sort of thing by TelNet.

The funny thing is they actually felt so twenty first century.
;D

I used to talk with an erisian group in Texas, whilst sitting in Durham University England, it felt like real Sci-Fi.
