everyone has noticed that the dude has a copy of "being and nothingness" by sartre on his bedside table. but there are lots of scenes with books in the background. i've been able to make out "gorky park", a book on bowling and i think one of the hoyle's card games or casino games books. oh, and catch-22. anybody else notice anything of note? a bit esoteric, i know, but just thought i'd ask.
I'll tell you what I'm blathering about...

I noticed that every time Donny bowls, he is wearing a different bowling shirt with a different name on it. I've tried to make out all the different names, but I always forget what I'm doing halfway through the film.

I'd be willing to bet that the dude has a copy of "The Lazy Man's Guide to Enlightenment" by Thaddeus Golas.  "We are equal beings and the universe is our relations with each other. The universe is made of one kind of entity: each one is alive, each determines the course of his own existence."  That is the first line of the book, and the rest of the book is based on that statement.  While I was looking for the authors name, I stumbled upon this link:

http://freespace.virgin.net/sarah.peter.nelson/lazyman/lazyman.html

it's the entire book online for your reading pleasure.

Stranger in a Strange Land is surely in there somewhere, dude.

Dirty Hippie

Thanks for reviving this zombie, and thanks RevWade for the link to Lazy Man, which I look forward to reading whenever I get around to it.

jeanaragao

I noticed a book called Japanese Cooking when he laid at his new soon-to-be ex rug.

I struggled through "Being and nothingness" back at school.
That is some time I'll never get back.
Rarely would I recommend cliff notes en Lieu of the actual work but that might be close.
The gist is cool but a much boiled down version might be preferable.
Whatever gets you beyond the prison of bad faith.
Bowling, coitus. The possibilities are nearly endless.
