There is something else we could try. "Someone" take the test, make a copy of the questions and post them on the forum. Then we could all vote on how we each think The Dude would reply to each question!

Yeah, I think that what he does.
Innerestingly, it's Walter who keeps him reminding of the "old" values.

Yea, it's my inner-Walter that reminds me of what I think is important in the grand scheme of things.

My inner-dude is more likely to be patient, and ignore things so that I can enjoy my time and not cloud my mind with heinous things.

But I do find myself often kicking myself for that very same patience which allows the paraquats and the fascists to endanger the inner-dude to begin with.

damn.
You're damned if you dude, you're damned if you don't.

And quite proud we are of you Koog-meister, but this question is not how you as yourself would reply, but how you think THE Dude would have replied.
Would THE Dude reply yes or no?

Oh...i think the dude would say, yes, he often thinks about human kind. because he was interested in Mr.Lebowski's accolades, took the time to understand 'nihilism', had philosophical discussions. I'm pretty sure he would any way. ? right ?

Right I'm going to have to dig the holy text out and watch again to even begin to answer this.

OK just watched TBL through again and have to say, no.

BTW I will admit to sitting here with tears streaming down my face at the little scene where Walter fucks up the scattering of the ashes and he actually stands there like a lost little boy and he and the Dude hug. But maybe that's because I'm soft.

Hi M5, just wondering if you could ellaborate. I think your views tend to be a little more informed, because of your experience with many religions, so i value that opinion. But as to my viewings and from what I've seen about the dude, as a character and person, seems to be that he does in fact think about humanity and where we are going as a society. Other wise he wouldn't care at all, I'm not sure the movie would exist if the dude didn't think about it.

I'm not trying to start world war 3 here, but i'm curious as to what made you decide he wouldn't think about it?

...I'll step away and stand over in the corner now.

@M5, no, I don't think it's because you are soft. I feel very much the same about big, basically well-meaning loafy Walter Sobchak. He i s the child who wanders in the middle of the movie of life and tries to cling to something that can give him a frame of reference, like shomer shabbes, tradition from Moses to Sandy Koufax, 'over-the-lines', no hostage-no ransom, ... rules.

@Koog: I think The Dude has given up on rules, basically. He has tried to change the world (Seattle Seven, Port Huron Statement), so I vote No because IMHO he does no longer want to be used for any grand scheme. He has not lost his empathy or kindness, though ("they will kill the poor woman"; "don't Walter, he is a cripple".) So he even takes a stance for the arseholes if they get in trouble, even if they have just given him hell. So, he is very forgiving, no ego, you might say.

Mmmh, come to think of it, I think he cares for individual people in a way, but not for mankind in general. Well, just my opinion, of course.
Cheers

He's a natural--he doesn't have to think about it. I vote no.
