That place is being hit by explosion after explosion. It's gotta be hell having to be there, man!

UPDATE AT 7:10 P.M. -- TOKYO (AP) -- Japan's nuclear safety agency says an explosion has been heard at Unit 2 of the Fukushima Dai-ichi nuclear plant.

Scary shit indeed, man.  I don't know about you, but I'm pretty sure putting nuclear reactors around an area KNOWN for, like, millennia for having a massive propensity for FUCKING EARTHQUAKES might not have been Japan's, you know, like, smartest moment ever.  Sorry, shit like this really brings out the uber-enviro-arsehole in me.  :-\  I don't like river dams, either.  Vegas and its electricity and water needs can kiss my butt.

Gomennasai.

Nihon, daijobu?  Atama ga itai desu.

All that said, I heard on the radio earlier today that the explosions were external to the reactors;  hydrogen gas was being blown off and igniting, but it was outside.

'Course, they also said that some US Navy squids were catching some rads.

Didn't say how much, but the sciencey-expertey guy that NPR-Lady was talking to (I clearly was not paying very close attention) started spouting off about how there's radiation and then there's radiation, and it depends on what kind of particles and stuff has different half-life, and different ability to penetrate the body, all of which is, of course, completely true, but still... it kind of smacked of doublespeak to me.

Caesar dude

There's been loads of media speak shit going down here,.

The online physics geeks forums are all talking about the science of what is going on and basically what they are saying is that these reactors are fucked...they are all saying the same thing...the rods are past redemption and are already or will be soon in meltdown.

There will be no nuclear explosion...relax...but there will be massive release of radiation....either way...the areas for hundreds of miles are fucked!

A bad day on Planet Earth.
Love is like a butterfly it goes where it pleases and it pleases where it goes. :)

That's a good point you bring up; I wonder how much shit will be covered up in the months to come? I mean the really bad parts. No doubt the spin machine is all ready gearing up for work.

Fucking eh, Chernobyl number two. The damage to the people in the former USSR was horrendous! I think we have seen images of babies being born totally deformed, children with cancer and other terrible diseases. Makes me sick to think about. Mark it all ZERO!

Banjo Dude

Actually, the reactor at Chernobyl was an entirely different design;  the ones in use in Japan have significant enclosures (feet-thick walls of concrete and steel and shit like that) that should help contain things if it gets that hairy.  Problem is, I don't think they've ever been tested.  Here's to hoping they don't get that test.

Caesar dude

They've just been tested .... well three of them of them any way and have done exactly as designed...blown up!!

Unfortunately we are now down to the last defence...the reactor chamber itself...doesn't matter though cos the rods are already too hot and have started to melt...they will now release radiation....however, the good news is that there should be no further explosions...just a massive radiation leak...so that's all right then!

The China Syndrome is not the issue here, dude. Well, actually it is. I wonder if reactor 1, 2, or 3 will really do the whole meltdown thing? They seem to be saying it will. Sure as hell hope not, mang!

During the Chernobyl incident, they discovered a rare earth element at the bottom of the impact zone, which was black and yellow that also had crystaline formations. They named it Chernobylite. It only occurs during high atomic pressure incidents, and is comprised of 10% uranium.

You can't get much more information about it, but I wonder if that's forming over there.
You're damned if you dude, you're damned if you don't.

That's interesting, man, that fucking intersting. Have to read up on that.
