Is nihilism an intellectual problem, or an emotional one?

Some people really suffer from the feeling that nothing seems to matter any more than anything else. David Foster Wallace called it a 'stomach-level sadness.' I think that's a pretty good description of it.

They beliefs in nosssing, and it seems to suck for them, poor souls.

This article talks about the AZ shooter, and the possibility he was a nihilist, maybe maybe not, but from a Dudeist perspective he sure lacked the skill to abide. My question is, how can a Dudeist explain what he believes in to a nihilist who is seeks meaning?

Well, dude, we just don't know. Isn't a "nihilist who is seeks meaning" an oxymoron? If he seeks meaning, he's not a nihilist, and if he's a nihilist, he would not be seeking meaning. To explain the tenets of universal dudeism would seem futile.

It's just like my opinion, man, but, you know what I'm saying, ah..........oh fuck, lost my train of thought here......

IMHO I think it's a perception problem, but then since I am an Idealist, I think EVERYTHING is a perception problem! ;D
One of the hardest things to do is to change someone's perception...especially if they do not wish to be so moved from their cherished pov.
You know the old saying..."My mind's made up. Don't confuse me with the facts!"
Trying to read Tao of The Dude to them is darn useless unless you can make it funny!

And...I am not a nihilist who believes in nothing. I'm an Idealist who believes in a Whole lot of Nothingness! ;D ;D

The difference is one of "It is what it is", and "It is what we make it".

Quantum Theory tells us we must project in order to perceive, and it is our hopes, our fears, our expectations and our anxieties  that we project into the quantum that is reflected back to use to create the Reality we perceive. We reap what we so.

From: Dr. Quantum
http://www.fredalanwolf.com/page5.htm
Question:   Do we project reality?

Answer:   The evidence of physiology seems to indicate so. It tells us that our memories alter our perceptions and hence color our senses of the putative objective world. Hence the world we see appears according to our expectations. A change in expectations leads to a different view of the world. Since we can't get beyond our subjective views, we can never really determine what is absolutely "out there." Classical neurophysiology would say that our minds play tricks on us and in some sense distort the "true" objectivity of the world. The quantum neurophysiology returns to the shamanic or magical view that there is no "out there" until it's perceived. Both views suggest we must project in order to perceive."

If we fill our quantum with fear, hatred, sadness and suffering, then that will become the Reality we exist in.
If we fill our quantum with peace, love, comfort, happiness and abiding, then that will be the Reality we exist in.
Which just happens to be pretty much what the Buddha was telling us all those years ago.
If you would like to make it an Eastern thing...just change Quantum to Karma! :D

Darn...thar I go ramblin again.

But to get back to your question...how do you explain Dudeism to a nihilist...?
Well dude...very slowly! ;D

And of course you're right, which is the paradox which proves the insanity, but none the less  is true! Thus Skeptical Idealism 2.0!

Fucking eh, cc dude; you are right, sir. Thus the words of wisdom from historic accounts of The Big Lebowski....... "ah, fuck it, dude, let's get us a lane." Words that I personally take comfort in, and words that help me abide.
