I have a wish.

I wish to live in a kinder and more compassionate world.

We can philosophize and meditate about what do no harm means, and delve ever
deeper into the essence of doing no harm, but the simple truth is, all that
philosophy and meditation, all that searching for the essence, means little
without a kind and compassionate world to practice in.

If we are to create a kinder and more compassionate world, our simple
message of "do no harm" must make its way into the hearts and minds of those who
need it the most - all 7 billion of us

I have many friends of all different religions, beliefs, backgrounds,
politics, social status and just about any other diversity you care to think of.
When we get together, we do so as friends, and we enjoy each others company in
spite of everything else. Yeah, we argue a bit, but we all respect each other
and our differences. In fact, I think it just may be our differences we
enjoy about each other most.

But one thing we all know; if one falls down, the rest will extend a helping
hand. If one is under duress, we all will come to their rescue.

We know and trust each other not to take advantage, or do any harm.

That is the kind of world we should and must have.

In that kind of world doing no harm is not a hard thing to do, it's not
something we even have to think about, it just comes naturally, in fact, in a world
of friends doing no harm is easy.

We need a world of 7 billion friends.

Thank you for being one of them!

well said cckeiser. I think that enjoying the pleasures life has to offer needs to be accompanied by an ethic of not harshing anyone elses buzz. Those two rules make up the tipsy two legged stool of enlightened hedonism, but can be a powerful metric. Having a jay on my porch brings pleasure and does no harm, but having a few caucasians and driving around does.
The dad abides.

I believe that is why the Buddha is smiling. ;D

CC and Duddha yes it is a beautiful and worthy ethic, and I admire you both for trying to live life that way, but as usual (it being a favourite crusade of CC's) my point was missed.

I don't object to your ethic what I object to is the statement that was made:

Quote from: Duddha on July 31, 2011, 08:45:23 AM
Abiding= enlightened hedonism.

1. Do no harm
2. Enjoy life!

For you yes, your abidance may be so, but for me no.

I am very happy for the pair of you in your "Do No Harm" ethic, go fourth and live your lives as shinning examples of this life style, I admire the fact that you share a dream of a better world, but much as I have problems with "prayer", and "evangelism", I also do not see "do no harm" as part of my abidance, and do not see any of these as essential to Dudeism.

I'm sorry no matter how many times you quote http://youtu.be/q3Xy8YaJH5U, you still have failed to convince me, as a credo it over simplifies the beauty and intricacy of life that includes both the yin and yang of violence and harm.

All you are doing here is evangelising a point of view that I have given due consideration to and find lacking.

Much like the Dudeist Christians, I have no problem with the Dudeist No Harmers, or Dudeist Enlightened Hedonists, but please stop trying to tell me what my abidance should be.

I abide as I abide, you abide as you abide.

I go against my own creed and finally say:

Abiding = Wu Wei

Do without doing, be without interfering. Abidance is taking the water course way.

CC you've been here long enough to know how I roll. ;D

I just object to the "This is the way it is" type statement.

I agree some people feel they should have an ethos, let them find one that fits.

I just worry that some people present their opinion of Dudeism as the only way.

When the joy of dudeism is it's personal.

We've each arrived here by our own personal paths.

My real answer to the question "What does it mean to abide?" is I can't tell you because to abide my way is unlikely to work for you.

I am always conscious that we the opinionated only represent a minority here, even as I type this the stats say:

Users: 5
Guests: 21
Total: 26

So there's five of us shouting and 21 people either passing through and thinking "what the hell are those monkeys yelling about" or even a few of them are professional lurkers here who just like the sound of the noise.

Yep, thought better of it just a little after posting. Another time I should have said Fuck It and deleted the reply.

The Ethos then becomes: This may not be Nam...but There are No Fuckin' rules.
You Abide your way, and I'll Abide my way.
Fuck the Officials down at the League Office...They can Fuckin' Unpost it! ;D

Yeah, I like that. 8)

CC I prefer you actually post the reply.

Argument is not shouting at each other, slagging each other off. Argument is how I test the level of my belief in a point of view, through discussion and reasoned counterpoints.

For all I know my point of view could easily be wrong, if we don't discuss it here I could spend the rest of my life fooling myself.

Now that I like.

Dudeism for me has always been a religion of realisation (like Zen), one day I heard about this concept, liked it and was able to say that fits (most of) the way I feel about things.

Please don't ever "not post", remember this is a convivial discussion between friends down the pub not shouting match, as I said I could be entirely wrong in my point of view, but I won't know unless others state their points of view, and I am able to measure mine against that.

I am actually dyslexic, the best spell checker in the world is google, just paste the word that wont work for you in there.

For instance:

Quote from: Google

PASSIONETLY

And google says:

Showing results for PASSIONATELY. Search instead for PASSIONETLY.

The reason google is so good is it doesn't use the same way M$ Word (or the forum here) uses for spell checking which is an heuristic algorithm based on rules preset by programmers, it uses statistics, it shows alternatives then gives you the statistically highest probability.

I love it.

Besides the Dude, to me Bruce Lee puts Abiding well in his famous quote ?Empty your mind, be formless, shapeless - like water. Now you put water into a cup, it becomes the cup, you put water into a bottle, it becomes the bottle, you put it in a teapot, it becomes the teapot. Now water can flow or it can crash. Be water, my friend.?

To me this embodies the Abiding state.

Good thought, dude. Welcome to dudevana! Pull up a rug, grab an oat soda and abide!

After reading this thread (good one, too dudes...) what keeps rattling around in this nogin of mine are the words of the Stranger following Dude's acclamation of abiding: "It's good to know the dude is takin' er easy for all us sinners". Is it perhaps that simple? To me, that's the import that the Coen brothers had in mind about abiding. Just takin' it easy in the Zen-like way the Dude did. Works for me!

"takin' er easy" is a basic proverb of dude like wisdom, IMHO. I don't think there is much argument that a dude would live longer and be healthier by takin' er easy. And I think a dude would have a better and more productive life by takin' er easy; even if a dude wanted to succeed at slacking.
