It was in La Jolla!
During Walter?s Eulogy to Donny he says ??and as a surfer he explored the beaches of Southern California from La Jolla to Rio?? When Walter says La Jolla he points to the ocean in front of him indicating that is where they are. The topography looks right. I?m sure that is where they tossed Donny?s ashes. Now we just have to see if we can match the place in the film to a place on the map!
http://maps.google.com/maps?f=q&source=s_q&hl=en&geocode=&q=la+jolla+california&sll=34.388779,-115.740967&sspn=4.677459,15.007324&gl=us&ie=UTF8&hq=&hnear=La+Jolla,+San+Diego,+California&ll=32.848046,-117.277637&spn=0.00923,0.029311&t=h&z=16

The La Jolla part would be a problem because La Jolla is South of L.A. County next to San Diego. Why would Donny, a resident of Los Angeles, never surf in L.A. at beaches like Redondo Beach, Manhattan Beach? Both beaches are known for surfing and the surf community and close to him.

It would have been more accurate to say that Donny "as a surfer he explored the beaches of Southern California from Malibu (big surfing area also) to Rio."

Or the point could be made that Walter was pointing more or less South toward La Jolla when referring to where Donny surfed.

The most important point is though, as a person (me, that is) living by the coast from Catalina Island, I can tell you that the view that Walter had, and as seen over his shoulder, would not be from Point Dume because it would be seen much smaller and from a different angle (it would appear much shorter). The view in the movie over Walter's shoulder is about 25 miles away from Catalina Island. From Point Dume it would be 65 to 70 miles, look a lot smaller and be much harder to see.

Sorry DB, but I do not see Catalina Island in the background. Here is the clip from the film:

With Google Earth or even with Google Maps it should [not] be too hard to find the rock from this clip.
I am wonering though if maybe the scene was shot from more than one location?

Yo dude, of course you would see Catalina Island from both locations; Palos Verdes and Point Dume. No doubt about it, but Catalina Island would look very different from Point Dume. It would be much further away, look much smaller and on most days it might not even be visible due to haze.

The angle you see over Walter's shoulder and in other shots in that scene you posted on YouTube would be about 26 miles from Catalina and from to close to where I pointed out in the Google Earth map.

That's just, like, my opinion, man.

I do not think it is Point Dume, but I cannot find the rock formation they are standing on at the location you have indicated.
But then I cannot find it at La Jolla either.
Since you live so close, can you take a picture of where you say it is and post it here for us?
Thanks

I'll try and find out the exact location. Got a couple of leads, got the boys in the crime lab working in shifts. If I find out, for sure, I can drive over and take a shot.

One of the problems is that along the coast in Palos Verdes, there are a hundred locations and points that look like that in the movie scene over looking Catalina. Even if i got the general location it would be a little hard to find the exact location without exact directions.

I have spent hours and hours on Google Earth combing the shore line from Point Dume all the way down to La Jolla and I have not seen any location that matches the scene in the movie.
If we are to make The Little Lebowski we need that exact location for the Donny's Ghost scene. Besides, it should a holy place to all Dudeist!! 8^)
Might be a place to gather each year on the date that Donny died.

Dude, check this out. Here is the scene where you can see Catalina Island (over Walter's shoulder), it's (Avalon) a VERY dude like place to hang out and party......................

Also, dude, Walter mentioned Donny surfing and exploring "Leo Carrillo" and "Pismo [Beach]" which would make more sense, because they are both North of Palos Verdes, close to Malibu and North of Venice where the Dude lived. It would make sense that Donny would surf those locations, as well as surfing down toward La Jolla which is by San Diego which is South of Palos Verdes by about 100 miles from where they are standing.

So where is that rock? Why can I not find it on Maps?
A rock like that should be easy to find.
It's down there some where. Let me take another look! 8^)

Dudes, try this: http://www.uer.ca/locations/show.asp?locid=24548

"This location was used in the movie "The Big Lebowski" for the scene where Donny's ashes are scattered. "

Perfect, mang! Good find, dude. Yup, San Pedro/Palos Verdes area.

The view over Walter's back would be like this based on cakebelly's find...............
