I'm relatively new around here and have only been a Dudeist Priest for a short while. However, I've noticed what seems to be a disturbing trend of undudely uptightness...

I've seen several posts where my fellow priests ask for a consensus on what the dude would specifically wear or drink or do and many siting our sacred film as a definitive answer to these and other questions.  I think maybe we need to focus more on the "Spirit of The Dude" and not so much on the specifics of the film.

I don't think any of us really need to wear rented bowling shoes without socks or break into the ROTC in college to be true Dudeists.

I love the film as much as anyone.  I love quoting it and finding those things I enjoy in common with the dude.  Bowling, drinking white russians, etc... and I think they all play their part in reminding me what being a Dudeist is really about.  Takin er easy and abiding no matter what bullshit drama may come.  But I think when it comes to what to wear or drink or do for fun...those are choices we all make ourselves...without concern for conformity.

But that's just like...my opinion...man.

I wouldn't worry, Rev.  You're not alone here, not all of us are Lebowskists.  I myself often go on the record as a non-Lebowskist (not anti) who uses minimal TBL references, mostly for a point of universal reference.

But look at it this way, Buddhists tend to get caught up on only one Buddha, and Muslims on only one prophet.  Doesn't mean Lebowskists only see the film and nothing outside, but they do have a tendency to get caught up in it, but hey, it's all good fun :)

Sometimes it can seem like a quote-fest, or a quote-off, but I tend to ignore anything that's nothing new and stimulating, as many ignore what I write as long and meaningless to them.  We all get along here and put in and get out what we each want.

I'm sure as you delve deeper and stick around longer you'll start to find your own niche here.  We have some good discussions on the forum now and then, when there's enough people about with enough ideas to make a spark (we're easy going posters and thinkers alike :)), and check the Dudespaper, the constantly evolving codex of all that is Dudely.  And hey, if you've got some good ideas, why not think about writing an article, or starting a column?  Does me good a creative outlet once a month  8)

Glad to have another non-Lebowskian on board.  Pull up a deckchair and stick a wedge of lime in a bottle of Corona, Dude.

"Spirit of The Dude"

Fuckin EH! man.

I'm here for a good time... not a long time...

As much as I like the movie,... its just a movie...

for me all the message/reminder of this movie was that im fine, what the fuck is normal? and whos the fucking asshole that came up with this fucking rat race of life?... 2.5 kids, mortgage, nice cut lawns, new car in front, keep up with the jones, blah blah blah... (I want to hang who ever came up with all this bullshit by the balls).

But anyway I dont need or like white russians (Im a miller guy) to feel like im a "dudiest"... I am and have been a "duder" for a long time because I have allways questioned the status quo and I am still asking who the SOB is that came up with all this BS!.

Yep agree generally.

Not a Lebowskist myself either (get a bit annoyed looking at the Dudeist Facebook site occasionally when all that people do is post quotes).

In fact I think I'll write a script (programming not film) just to randomly post bits of the film script to the group. :-)

But then I have been known to get very uptight about the Dudeist Christians (may they all abide just not on my rug) trying to tie Dudeism together with christianity. With terms like sin, evangelism, and so on, it may work for them but I fear the representation that we are a branch of christianity. I am not a christian.

I do think that this is a wonderful forum to express opinions and discuss what and where and why we call ourselves Dudeist.

Occasionally people do take me the wrong way and get wound up by things I say, but as Rev Ed has said a lot of my subtle humour is lost when reduced to text only.

Let the Lebowskists wear their jellies and bathrobes if they want. I'm only too happy with my badges on my suit jacket.

Whew!

I've been sitting in these forums and some facebook pages thinking I *had* to be a book of quotes and movie references. It is good to know that there are other people who think like I do, that there is more to Dudeism than that.

Now don't get me wrong, I will still be quoting and mentioning the movie, but it probably won't be in every post anymore.

Fuckin-a, man!

Amen! Or, as the parlance may better come across, "Hey, man!" I'm reminded of my Unitarian Universalist friends: there are Christians among them, but you don't have to be Christian to be UU; there are Buddhists among them, but you don't have to be Buddhist to be UU. So it is: Dudeism is no more Christianity than it is Buddhism (and I know the closest connection is likely Taoism, but I would suspect Lao Tzu would have about the same interest in establishing Taoist purity tests as the Dude would have in establishing a Dudeist purity test).

From what I'm seeing, Lebowskists have more in common with Trekkers than with Taoists. :)

Abide.

Trapper I would refer you to recent ranting on this thread just the point that an alternative view was brought into question there.

Oh, I know, Meekon. Saw it when it was happening.  :D Just his opinion, I guess, and that was mine, at least then. I'll have to think about it again tomorrow, you know?  ;D

There's room to be both a Lebowskists and a Dudeist, but that's just, you know, like my opinion, man.

Exactly what we tried to tell the individual, shame really.

they just kept posting about not getting too deep.

It was like watching a car crash in slow motion. You know like when your special someone asks you a question and you know there is no good answer, no way of not getting into that argument you're trying so hard to avoid.  ;D

I cannot tell you how many of these types of people/conversations I have to pull myself away from on any given week.

Rev. Gary (revgms)

Well, here is the left over question, should Lebowskists get ordained?

That sounds more ominous than I mean it to, but there is no way around it, if one wants to ask the question.

Mang, like my opinion is, it's cool, I am down with the ULC angle about ordination.

Are there lines to be drawn? Is Lebowskism, Dudeism, just another form? Same house, different rooms, or neighbors next door? Do we need a fence? Do I ask too many questions? These are important things to ask, I think.

I dunno so many ins an' outs, gotta limber up.
