Sermonising is too like evangelism for me.

What next Dudeists standing on street corners with "Repent, Donny is Dead" on sandwich boards.

Strange bearded Dudeists with copies of the DVD standing in shoping Malls yelling the word of the Dude at unlistening passers by.

I still stand with this point of view from the Dudespaper a while back:

I?m sorry but surely evangelism is diametrically apposed to the way of the Dude? Seems like too much uptight thinking for me.

As a cleverer man than me once said.

"A Dude fills his house with oat soda and burgers from In-N-Out. He sits out front with the door open. If a reactionary, or a nihilist should walk past and not notice, what the fuck, he doesn't bother them. But should a stranger pass and notice, and approach the Dude, he invites him in for a beverage."

That for me is the way of the Dude, that is how Dudeism should be transmitted. Not shouted from roof tops and evangelised. Too much unchecked aggression.
"I have noticed even people who claim everything is predestined, and  that we can do nothing to change it, look before they cross the road."

I think evangelizing takes too much work for one, but I think also implies that you actually care what other people think. And the Dude most certainly does not give two shits what anyone else thinks. He's gonna roll with people he likes, and everyone else can piss off, they are not important. He doesn't need others to see the world as he sees it. If they do, great, if not, fuck it.
That's just like, my opinion man.

Exactly, too much work. totally agree. If they can't see it too bad.

In fact there was a wonderful Buddhist come back to the other religions, it's OK (your point of view on religion) what ever you want, I'm sure you'll get it right in some other lifetime.

Absolutely man...like the Muslims Hadith No.20 "Among the words people obtained from the First Prophecy are : If you feel no shame, then do as you wish."

Gotta love that get out clause for whatever you want.....so many contradictions!!!

In peace and love and absolute non religious conviction....LOL

PEACE dudes!  ;D

I think most of us would agree that Dudeism is a religion that doesn't really lend itself well to evangelism. But the fact that you posted at all shows that in some sense you do care about what other people think. Or at the very least you're interested in an exchange of ideas that necessitates the stating of ideas. If there's any room for sermonizing at all it in Dudeism it would be as a vessel for the exchange of ideas, similar to the function the Dudespaper and sometimes this forum serve. I'm just saying that we have carte blanche here why not reinvent the "sermon" (for lack of a better word) as we see fit. If you will it it is no dream, Dude.

I mean, a sermon can be a moving, poetic thing and doesn't have to be all fire and brimstone and condemnation. Jon Donne comes to mind, I'm sure there are others.

"Any man's death diminishes me, because I am involved in mankind; and therefore never send to know for whom the bell tolls; it tolls for thee"
I don't get it. How do I sign this? Is there a special pen?

Love that one, gotta start using it, sometimes they suck me in and I start getting all reactionary, then I just chill an' say fuck it.

I donno, maybe just think if it is the right action for it's time and place, sermonize if that is the Dude thing to do at that moment, don't if it would be undudely. What's undudely? Too many ins an' outs to define that, no matter how strict a drug regieme you are on.

This meditation.

Is that like, going bowling with out actualy bowling?

You know, like just sitting there.

And I stopped doing sermons when I stopped going to the pub.

But here's one anyway;

Like attracts like.

Be who you are,
calm and clear and bright,
asking yourself every minute
is this what I really want to do,
doing it only when you answer yes.

This turns away those who have
nothing to learn from who you are
and attracts those who do,
and from whom you have to learn as well.
If you believe you can tell me what to think.
I believe I can tell you where to go.
