okay so like my friend tim, he totally believe in dudeism and he tells me i should totally get into it, something about it being better for me i dunno
but like im still a little fuzzy on the whole what is dudeism really?

i mean i've been surfin this forum and i went to the site and i read all the stuff but i don't understand so much

maybe it's my tired brain, i dunno.

i understand that this is a totally relaxed religion and all but is that it? just something to call yourself? be chillaxed all the time and don't worry? im a pretty "straightedge"(<- lol label) person, i don't smoke and i try not to drink and i haven't seen all of the big lebowski, only bits and pieces.

i would totally love it if someone could explain to me in extreme detail about this religion known as "dudeism"

Well, Dude, it's like this...

You've really got it summed up quite well there.  It's a worldview we have that is based on not getting hung up on things.  Stay relaxed in mind and body, go with the flow and carve your own way in life, abiding and keeping that good nature alight within you.

Dudes, much like Buddhas, have been peppered through history, enlightening theirselves into a state of being that benefits themsevles and those around them.  From noted figures such as Lao Tzu, the great sage of Taosim (even if he probably didn't exist, but his ideals live on!), to Heraclitus the greek philospher, to laid back author and transandentalist Mark Twain, to the late great comedian George Carlin.   These people knew how to look at life without seeing a big mess that needs unravelling with a pair of stressed hands, they just saw how the universe flows and how best they can ease themselves into their own mellow flow.

We here, at the Church of the Latter Day Dude believe in becoming "Dude".  We don't want to live a mundane life of stress, worry, hassle and generally being an arsehole (celft or otherwise), we just want to abide.  It's an attitude that can help you be happy and fulfilled, without the misery of materialism, greed, envy, hate, or any of that negative crap people fuel themselves with.

My advice, DrDree, check out our Dudespaper http://dudespaper.com/.  We've got a lot of people working on philosophising Dudeism, trying to unravel the mysteries of what Dudeism really is, bringing new shit to light and opening new discussions on what it is to Abide, how to relax and meditiate in a Dudeist way, and how to just flow with your own Dude way.  There's new and interesting thngs coming up every week, and a few years of good materlial in there already.  Take a casual look from time to time.

You don't need to be a smoker, or a drinker, or to have even watched The Big Lebowski (although we do use a lot of TBL references as common ground, and we have a lot of Lebowskists around, so it might help).  It's not about TBL, it's just been realised 'through' TBL.  It would be undude of anyone to tell you you should take up smoking, or drinking, just to fit in.  We here believe in cutting our own style, and cool.  Just s The Dude and the Stranger dug each other's styles (see, common point of reference :P)

So check out the site a bit more, read the Dudespaper whan you get the chance, just sit back, relax, and enjoy a dose of limber-minded thinking and let the stress flow in the opposite direction.

Hope this helps you, Dr.

Keep on keepin' on, man :D

nicely put, rev. ed. as an everchanging, ever-expanding compendium of dudeliness, the dudespaper is probably the best tub for anyone who wishes to bathe in the widening pool of dudeism, marmots and all.
I'll tell you what I'm blathering about...

drdee

alright, thanks so much for the insight
really helps me understand what this is all about

it looks a lot like buddhism to me from what you've said except more relaxed i guess

i'll check out the dudespaper

thanks loads man

That is nicely explained Rev. Ed.   Well done.
There is no need to participate in a drug consumption lifestyle, drink excessively etc. We never saw anyone in the movie wasted. Well except when the dude was slipped a Mickey Finn. That was not intentional.
Be good to yourself, be good to people, marmots, what have you. And the end result will show, that umm, instead of running around blaming, and you know, more people should listen and then they would learn something, maybe, you know?

Yeah, I'd say there's a strong Buddhist link.  We're mainly influenced by Taoism, as well as Buddhism, Humanism, Transandentalism...

We're more focused on the mind and body, and letting the spirit fit in thereafter.  Pruning out the intensity of rituals you'll find in a lot of religions, and trying not to get caught up in the sectist crap that has befallen Buddhism and it's old pure teachings.

You get your mind limber and your body relaxed you'll get your spirit in good shape for whatever may come, and have yourself a better life in the meantime.

Welcome to the fold, Doc, pull up a seat and take a load off!

that's a good point rev. ed. dudeism is a religion that's almost 100 percent superstition free. of course there is the whole sept 11, 1991 check conspiracy theory, and the unsolved knudsen conundrum, as well as several other mysteries to be decoded over the upcoming centuries. but for the most part, yes, it celebrates life, not afterlife. space, not outer space. and peace of mind, not pieces of real estate on earth or in heaven.

Who are the Knudsen?  ;D

Having to describe Dudeism in one sentence I would say that: "It is the universal view such as when you are eating a wonderful sandwich and it fells on the floor you take it, breath on it and eat it without stomping on it in rage". Translate this in correct English nomenclature and maybe it makes sense.  ;D
Yeah well, that's just, ya know, like, your opinion, man.

In Dudeness we abide.

And Rev. Ed, greatly said. I dig your style here as much as in the Dudespaper.  8)
