But seriously didn't we set St Donny's Day and all of us attempt to meet up last March 5th?

    Donny is a "saint?" WTF?

This is my concern, dudes; when you bestow religious trappings on a dude like so-called "sainthood" you begin to establish a dangerous religious hierarchy. AKA; I'm an "official saint," and others are not. I'm holier than thou, others are below me.

Dudes, this is beginning to sound like Catholicism and other oppressive religions with all of the undude titles like asshat priests, cardinals, nuns, fathers and the like.

Do we really want to turn Dudeism into a fucked up dead religion like Catholicism with level after level of bullshit titles, saints, no coitus (does anyone really believe they don't get some zesty coitus on the side?) and special privileges?

Next we'll start seeing shit like "patron saint of bowling," or coitus, or burgers, or what have you.

Dudeism is not a religion, it's a life style different for all dudes, not a dead religion filled with titles, rules, authority, and a stiff necked set of beliefs that will be followed or they send woo by your pad to pee on your rug.

Do we really want Dudeism to end up like these undude dipshits who sure as hell don't roll and claim to shun coitus...............

Or this nihilist (Cardinal Bertone) who thinks he's are everyone's fucking park ranger.............

Or this extreme undude protector of child molesters..............

All I can say is that it's good to know he's out there taken er' easy for all us sinners.

That's like just my opinion, man.

  • Have no idea dude?
But here is another article from the Dudespaper on The Day Donny Died:
    http://dudespaper.com/the-day-donny-died.html/

I do not agree with that date either, but do not have a better date to suggest as yet.
It can not be in 1990 as someone suggested on the basis of that was the day of Bush Sr's "This Aggression Will Not Stand" speech. That can be explained as a news rebroadcast of the speech sometime in Sept of 1991.
Also dudes, no where is it stated the events taking place MUST be all in the same week or month. It is quite possible that The Dude wrote the $0.69 check at Ralph's on Sept 11, 1991 and his conversation with his landlord Marty took place in Oct of 1991.
As for Bowling, the season usually begins in Sept and the Finals are competed in May or June depending on the number of teams on the league and how many weeks they bowl. The Semi's would only be a week or two earlier.
My Monday Night league has 6 three man teams and we roll 32 weeks starting the first Monday after Labor day. Last year we rolled from 9/14 to 4/19. Regional and State competitions usually take place after or near the end of Leagues in May and/or June. But then that is here on the Right Coast, who the hell knows how they roll in LA!

Well said, although I think the Saint Donny thing is tongue-in-cheek (so to speak) . . more of a gag than anything else; there is a danger that some Dudes will take that all a little too seriously. I guess the urge to (sub-consciously or otherwise) adopt some kind of structure in our more abstract endeavours (such as spiritual yearning) is only too human. Or is it? Is it merely a learned or adopted way of approaching the great mysteries? Two thousand years of being told that one cannot approach the 'divine' without the services of a priest has royally fucked us up. The danger of being burned at the stake, stoned to death, stretched on a rack or some other vile form of retribution for those who have different ideas has imprinted a fear and mistrust of others who worship/practice in a different way. All this hierarchy BS is, in the end, just another form of social control; useful for those who do pull the strings when wars need to be waged (look at these fuckers now trying to start up a 'holy war' when all they want is to get their hands on natural resources. What use is a god if he encourages you to hate and kill? We have enough humans in power that are doing that already).

We are, are we not, all individuals (oh yeah, the Dude at the back isn't, forgot) and if we each contain (or have the potential to bring into being) a - for want of a different expression - divine spark then surely that spark is individual, too. No less or more divine than others - but different. How then can a priest even hope to understand another individual's spiritual needs? The truth is, they don't even try - they don't know how: one cannot experience the ineffable by being lectured at from a book that was constructed to bring into being - and maintain - a priestly hierarchy.

I must say that I haven't got it in for Christians - it's just that one doesn't get much of an opportunity to meet them. Oh, I know there are millions who claim to be Christians (I've been lucky enough to count two as my friends -  they've got some weird doctrinal hangovers - but they sincerely try). The Quakers are generally cool, though - I like those Dudes. There are millions who claim to be Muslims, too - some try - but the problem is, again, the hierarchy of Mullahs and what-have-yous; diverting the 'faithful' from direct experience with their God. I like the Sufis, though - Sufism, generally, is pretty darn cool. And so on - there are elements (usually frowned-upon or repressed) in all faiths that try and retain the essential truth. Which is: we don't need no stinkin' priests - we may need help and guidance - but our personal communion/experience with the divine is ours alone . . it is in fact our right. As long as you are not hurting yourself (although that is one way to enter a trance state, so I believe) or others then you are doing alright, Dude.

True Shamen (there are egotists and fakirs in all offices of 'man') will open the door for you; prepare the sacrament and may offer help if asked but he/she knows that your experience is yours and yours alone. Anyway, going off on tangents, now . . I guess all I meant to say was that we have to be on guard against such a hierarchical structure developing within Dudeism; standing jokes, over time, can become doctrine, too.

As an aside, I wonder if our post-reward system is rather undude; it may alienate others from posting on the forum (when we consider the nature of the site and the nature of our nature - we have been fucked in the ass for thousands of years). This Superdude / High Dude stuff may tickle the ego or what-have-you (and I know it is meant in fun) but I think it is a barrier for those who may feel apprehensive about making a comment on the Forum. Let's get rid of it - a Dude is a Dude, Dudes. Abide   ;D

  • I agree with Cake. Hierarchies suck, equality is where evolution is leading us,, because deep down we all came from the same source we are all the same being experiencing different things. Therefore we are all equal and soon the majority will realize this. If everyone respected each other, there would be no wars, there would be no starving children, there would only be a world of love and understanding. And I look forward to the day when this becomes apparent for the majority of the human population.

    etc

    Whoa there cowboy.

DB you of all people should know by know not to take anything I say so seriously. How many times have i gotten into trouble baiting the christians, and I am usually the first on the soap box if i think someone is trying to "christianise" Dudeism.

I was in no way suggesting we start making people saints (even though I have been a Pope for many years now All hail Eris)

I was actually (in my usual befuddled way) trying to point out that I attended a day (there are pictures so I'm fairly sure about this one) that was sort of a Dudeist Holiday (that we had agreed on).

A very good point is made by CC

...no where is it stated the events taking place MUST be all in the same week or month. It is quite possible that The Dude wrote the $0.69 check at Ralph's on Sept 11, 1991 and his conversation with his landlord Marty took place in Oct of 1991...

Actually a very good point of view I'd not considered. Don't mean to be condescending there CC.

Except Sunday morning when my "Ordained Dudeist Priest" sticker in the window has given them what they think is leverage into my head (bloody jehovahs), and they are knocking on my door to try and discuss their damnable magazine (Also the effect of the human skulls in the window seems to have worn off).

Again I say most of you know I'm the first on the soap box whenever I think someone is trying to "christianise" Dudeism, for instance look at my rants in the Dudeist Paper about evangelism, and the number of times I've fallen out with christians on this forum over their overt (or not so overt) attempts to push the whole Dudeist bicycle (possibly unicycle) in the direction of their masonic hierarchical, misogynistic, monotheistic, monopoly.

    In My Considered Opinion.
(Bums to the rest of you).

;D You are probably marked on their books as the major challenge in the area; they only send their crack ninja witnesses to your place (there is probably some big prize for whoever gets a foot inside your door).

I think we were just kicking around the concept of hierarchies and certainly not the concept of a Meekon ;D A Meekon is a good thing to have on planet Earth - we abide with the Meekon (in the fifth incarnation, the fourth one was a bastard). We know you are the last Dude to be in favour of all the BS we were down on. I guess I should have read back a little and made that clear, Dude. I reckon DB knows that, too (although I shouldn't speak for anyone else) - 'we' are just down on the Catholics . . it's easy to trigger us off  ;D

Oh for sure, Meekon dude, just kicking a few concepts around (not to mention kicking a few religious undudes around like the asshats in the red robes and goofy looking fish hats), causing some shit for fun and to some degree expressing a few "that's just like my opinion, man" in the family restaurant here. Basically I think after a lot of discussion it was generally agreed that no-one else claimed that date so we would have it. Check the paper and some forum discussions that happened earlier on in the year.
