  • I think it's interesting how everything the Dude does is based on his relationships with people and everything Walter does is based on money.

  • From the book "I'm a Lebowski, you're a Lebowski" (The bible), Chapter one "I won't say hero, ´Cause what's a hero?.Pag.7

    Abide:

1.To find somebody or something acceptable or bearable.
    2. To endure or withstand /archiac)
    3. To have the ability to say, "Fuck it.Let's go bowling"

  • Was wondering what the tribe thinks that abiding means?

To me, abiding means that I hang in there and take life it comes. Not trying too much to make it come, or trying too much to stop it from coming. Just doing what life expects and take' er' easy for all the sinners out there, as the fella once said.

Abiding is going with the flow, or, if you want, going against the flow, but doing it with style, class and a bit of humility. Either way, not wanting to fuck with anyone.

Abiding means to agree to disagree if debating in a family restaurant over coffee, or smoking a righteous one with other dudes while you contemplate all the shit around you.

Abiding means its OK to be a fuck up sometimes, being a deadbeat, a loser, someone the square community won't give a shit about, but at the same time, winning the battle of life and sharing some of the spoils with your buds.

Fucking a, abiding comes natural to people, its all the madness that causes us to be undude, if we let it get to us, it ends up knocking us over the line and putting us in a world of pain while we end up unabiding. Fuck that, relax, abide, have a cold one and enjoy the semis. So, someone pisses on your rug, get over it, shit happens, just do what comes natural, stop by the old man's pad behind the gate, and grab a new rug to the tie the room together. On the way out, stop by the ole' cash machine and take care of business. Stopping of course to enjoy the scenery and a toe or two.

If the landlord comes around looking for the rent, offer him a j and let the dude know that you'll slip it under the door in a day or three. All in all, in good times or bad times, just say "fuck it, lets get us a lane and go bowling."

What does abiding mean? Fuck me, that's an easy one...when life tosses you a lemon (which sometimes it does), make it into lemonade and have a nice long refreshing long island iced tea, after that, its all good.

My point, Dude, is why should we settle for the twenty grand that a small minded life will bring, when we can keep the entire million that abiding will bring. Am I wrong? That way you can pass with a smile on yer face without feelin' like the good Lord gypped you.

Welp, that about does her, wraps her all up............Abide, dudes. Always abide.

Thanks for writing this, Dude! That pretty much sums it up.

    2. Enjoy life!

  • I'm sorry I still can not accept "Do no harm" as an ethic to abiding.

I refer my learned colleagues to the scene from TBL in the car park where the Dude stands against the Nihilists and does a fair bit of harm.

It is a very nice idea and if everyone lives by it fine, but I still say when some fascist is trying to take what is yours, or trying to rape your Girlfriend/Sister/Wife/Mother, then some harm must be committed.

"Avoid doing harm to others at all cost" I can agree with.

    or

"Harm only as a last resort"

When some ass wipe tried to mug me I stood my ground, alright he hit me with the knuckle duster he had been waving around and claiming "This is what I'm all about!". I'm not sure if I hit him but I walked away from the incident with my phone and all my money and cards etc.

Unfortunately I truly believe there will always be that type of human paraquat who will try to feed on what they see as the weaker individuals, and there will always come a line that once crossed demands action not leafleting.

All in my humble opinion of course.

(notice I have not even begun to go into the problems with "Do no harm" and the ex-wife attacking me with a serrated edged knife).

  • Actually I'm not even sure I agree with:

    Abiding= enlightened hedonism.

Abiding is your own thing, if it works for you, do it.

Personally I count myself a bon vivant. I can be a bit of a hedonist, but don't see that as necessarily part of my Dudeism.

  • Do No Harm is not Pacifism dudes...not the way I look at it anyway. It's trying to live as harmless a life as you can...within reason. It's not good men doing nothing in the face of evil.
But of course...like Abiding...we leave the fundamentals to each to figure out for themselves. After all, it's your life dude, and no one has the right to tell you how to live it. All we asks is you consider how your actions effect everyone else.

    From the http://donoharm.us web site:

"We believe that the first and most basic moral law is, "Do no harm." Because we can feel pain and suffering, we can imagine the pain and suffering of others, and we can act accordingly to minimize the harm we cause.

What does "do no harm" mean? Ultimately it means to give thoughtful consideration to our actions. ?Do no harm? simply means to consider how our actions may affect the world we all share, to be compassionate in our dealings with all creatures, and not to thoughtlessly despoil our planet."

I own a gun, and if the time ever arrives that I need to use it to defend my own from human paraquats I will not hesitate...I will not initiate violence...but I will defend myself and my family.

The whole purpose of the Do No Harm message is to help create a kinder and more compassionate world...one that I would like to live in. One we can all Abide in.
