But, Brother Erwin, why does he object to being castrated? Is it because of loss of sexual function? Or is it because of pain? Loss of blood? Loss of a body part? Symbolic loss of his manhood? Being munched out by a ferret? All of these, most likely, but in what proportion?

Well, dude, we just don't know, and we don't have an indication of whether he desires another coital session with Maude, either. I think we do know that he wouldn't pursue such an enterprise, nor would he refuse an offer to partake. We also know that the only reference he makes to jerking off is in reaction to hearing a sex trade mogul's business plan. Dissing was the intention here--the reality of the act it refers to is unknown. Plus, he's got a strict medication regimen going on. Gotta play havoc with his jewels.

Lack of sex drive, man. Indifference. You could say that it serves to make him more Dudely, in the manner of that cleric whose testicles were removed by the father of a young woman he was having an affair with (anyone know who I'm talking about? If we see the Dude as the Hero of the myth (a'la Joseph Campbell's famous theory)..if he is seen as the kind of Christ of the movie..then..like Jesus..his sexuality isn't the issue.   He fits right in there...we see the world through his eyes (and shades) and his ethos is universal for people of all race, creed, gender or sexuality.

As far as the Dude's happiness post-physical, I doubt Maude would let him know the purpose of the visit..she clearly sees him as a bit hapless and capable of inadvertently killing her plan.

The Dude just seems to be happy because he is basically free of "the case" and can now return to the happy person he was before the Treehorn thugs started the whole durn shooting match.  For those who see TBL through a Buddhist lens..the post-exam Dude is happy because he has finally released the stressful clinging to the rug and the caper that caused him unhappiness in the first place.

 He has everything he needs (as someone wrote previously)..his Holy Sacraments...Creedence, Car, Oat Soda, and J.  Notice it's not until he gets paranoid about Da Fino, crashes his car and finds Larry's homework that he once again plunges into the case (notice the fearful look on his face as he peruses Larry's homework).
