Yes we went to the moon. Full Stop. We used the technology available at the time  and we had an adventure and we brought back literally a tonne of rocks, some of which are still being analysed.

When apollo 11 was about to take off from the moon and the guys were doing their pre take off checks it went something like this.

Buzz "CB (Circuit Breaker) 132 push." Neil "Check"

Buzz"CB 111 Push" Neil "Check"

Buzz "CB 139 Push" Neil "oh dear it seems to have snapped off, never mind, pas me your pen dude I'll poke it in with that."

I love innovation ....nothing like a scary moment to get your brain thinking....

But in most situations all you ever need is a bit of adrenaline and a pokey stick!

Yeah, innovation is one thing...and just plain old common sense is another. The U.S. spent Millions to develop and ball point pen that would write in zero G.
The Russians....they used a pensil.

And a cheap pencil at that!
