Yes he got 21 years. That is the maximum under the law there. However. His sentenced will be continually reviewed and will most likely be incremented 5 years at a time. FOR EVER until he dies.

I salute the Norwegians for the way the way the have responded to this murderous bastard. They haven't compromised their integrity by trying to change the law in order to satiate an immediate desire for revenge.

I almost agree with you AspiringDude.  I agree that it does nothing to bring back the victims.  And in this case it would make a needless martyr out of this guy.  And further more would potentially lead to more of these attacks.  And j
This is just my own opinion, but anyone that knowingly, willfully, and maliciously takes a life should be subject to the possibility of being put to death.  Not to say it should happen.  Which basically happens now. Obviously there should be some kind of discretion in this.  I mean afterall accidents happen and then there are self defense concerns as well.  I don't believe it is always about revenge although it most of the time is for some.  I feel if you out right commit murder then you give up the right to live.  That particular person was cheated out of having the chance at life by the murderer you know.  I'm not saying it needs to be all wild west and bloody.  Just that the option should he there for consideration.

No I can agree to all of that and I was referring to only 21 years for killing 77 people.  Like I said above though, if you take a life in cold blood you essentially give away your right to live.  I mean if it were me charged with such I wouldn't expect any less. I know that comes across very Walterish but I can differentiate between accidents and cold blood.

Under Norwegian Law that is the maximum sentence he can be given. This NY Times article explains it rather well and shows the compassion and the overall feelings of the victims families.

All Norwegian police are armed. I do not think he was expecting such weak resistance. He bombed Oslo and then town centre then two hours later landed on Utoya island. Where he carried out his shooting of unarmed kids for an hour before being apprehended.

I do not think for a minute he expected such an insipid response from the police or army. But hey that's what happened.

He could have been stopped or shot or taken down at any point in his attacks if the Norwegians had been a bit sharper.

He knew the risks but took them anyway...I don't think he cared a jot for his life at any point...in fact I think he was expecting to be shot and killed.
