Hi fellas,

We have, what appears to me, a very dude moment of the dude, when Papa Lebowski snarls at him:"and aren't ya?", after the Dude made clear to him that he has seen through the whole scheme.

All he says, is: "Yeah (or: yes), and...?" asserting that being a "bum" does not give anybody the right to treat you, aah, ...you know yourself.

Only a few seconds later he is trying to stop Walter from pulling PL out of his wheelchair, trying to stop somebody doing harm to that arsehole.

I like that. You cannot insult the Dude! He is uninsultable.

Yeah, what do you think?

The Dude KNOWS who he is and is comfortable within his own skin.
He knows he is an asshole, but he also knows so is everyone else.
It's like if you have one...you are one. So what the fuck is there to get all uptight about.
As long as you're doing no harm mang, do what turns you on and fuck whatever anyone else thinks.
Cause mang, it doesn't matter what the fuck you do, someone will always think you're an asshole.
If you have one...You are one! Everyone is an asshole to someone else.
The Dude knows this so doesn't give a fuck what anyone else thinks.

I dig that the Dude knows he's an asshole, but he is an asshole with a heart. Your example that he doesn't want Walter to hurt PL and the whole premise of the movie itself: He gives up his slacker ways (sort of) for a bit to save a "poor woman" who probably doesn't need saving anyway. The Dude is a asshole but he is also a "Knight in tarnished armor". That explains his popularity with the "ladies'.

I don't see the Dude being an asshole...... I think he's just trying to stay afloat in shark infested waters. Like the playground in lower school man..... you know you're not a bully, but you're just trying to not look like a non-bully and paint a target on your ass....

And I dig that......if more people rolled that way, the place would be most Dude.....Know what I mean?
