Dude, where's my karma?

Dude, where's my karma?

It began with a withering comment from a friend. Over a couple of quiet drinks, conversation drifted towards the merits of our favourite movies. The object of our shared affection, The Big Lebowski, inevitably cropped up.

Set in Los Angeles in the early 1990s, this stoner classic by the Coen brothers tells the convoluted tale of a slacker called the Dude (Jeff Bridges). A likeable dropout, he's scorned by the establishment yet seems to cruise through life. The Dude's sole mission? To seek compensation for a soiled rug.

His adage - ''the Dude abides'' - sums up his appeal. He accepts change, lives in the moment and is unburdened by worldly concerns.

Groovy article, for sure. The idea of just bringing a "little" Dude into people's lives really put a good foot forward - just like my opinion.

This seemed eerily familiar to me, and then I realized why, post named the same from Nov 10, 2012 in the Spiritualism section (with the same article body, but formatted a little different).

Abide.

Archaic: Live

The Dude does not confront difficulty, and so has none.

Far out. Not a bad article, and she makes some good points. I agree there is a balance though, and it can be a fine line to walk man.

"Relaxing, it transpires, is hard work."

This comment made me laugh because sometimes it's so true.  Several years ago, if you asked him what he was up to the uncle of one of my friends would occasionally reply "I'm practicing the art of relaxation," and would sometimes follow that with, "Some days it's not as easy as it sounds."  I was a kid with few responsibilities at the time, but as I grew older and life got more complicated I realized this insight was rather profound.

But I definitely agree with you Judd Dude, it's about finding balance; the Yin and Yang.  Too much of a good thing, even relaxing, is detrimental.  Sometimes you gotta' feed the monkey, and sometimes you gotta' let the monkey feed you.

This balance is evident in the film. The Dude like White Russians, but he never gets too drunk to function (just keeping his mind limber). The rest of the characters show extremes that throw them out of the natural accord of the universe, and let them stray from inner Dudeliness.

By the way, I'm new to the forum. So if you disagree with anything, well, that's just like, your opinion, man.
