Hi Dudes,
I understand there's some concern here and elsewhere too about the political climate and the international image of the US.

Now, neither do I want to belittle anything nor do I want to re-create a myth about how wonderful everything is or was.

Still, for me the US also stand for another tradition, and as I have stated in another thread, for freeing us from the evil of national socialism.

So I would like to open this new thread about the other, and I dare say, better face of what the US may well stand for. And recently I came across this, and it fucking impressed me.

Perhaps you dudes would like to add something to it.

Yeah, man, what do you think?

You're welcome, Uberdude! Most welcome.
How can one debate a guy who went through that.

Rev. Gary (revgms)

Yeah I remember this, I was engaged in the fight to allow gay marriage in ME, I just moved there and could not vote, but I did what I could.

I don't know what to tell ya Dudes, some where along the way too many have lost the vision of what America was born to be.

There seems to be two Americas, one that is part of human social evolution, and another seems to be hellbent on going back to feudalism, the latter America has a name, murca. Yeah mang I don't live there, in murca.

brother_erwin

Yea, revgms I know what your point is but what is the connection to Murca?  Like, the small place in Portugal  ???

Rev. Gary (revgms)

Naw, it is what we call crazy nationalistic, haters from America, over at the Colbert Nation. It is a play on the word American, Murcan.

Like people from America would never use depleted uranium as an ordinance, at least not willy nilly, like the Murcans did in Iraq. That sort of thing. Murcans are racist throw backs to an earlier time in our evolution.

SenatorTso

So.Damn. This, mang.

Glad I caught this thread today.

I've been going around and around with my dad in emails. As he gets older, he's getting more and more Murcan like. This is a guy who went against the grain and would teach swimming lessons to the kids of migrants who'd roll thru town, saying, "Doesn't matter if their parents are illegal or not. They're kids. And I'm not going to risk one of them drowning at a lake or pool while their folks work. Not on my wawtch." All my growing up years he was very liberal, very progressive. Now that he's retired he believes every fool email that comes down the pike his way.

Glad to see some sense being spoken.

At least I'm housebroken.

@revgms: Thanks, man, one lives and learns  :)

@Senator: Sounds like you Pa used to be a very cool dude. What, do you think, would he think about Philipp Spooner?

@Brother Erwin - Yeah he was *way* more Dudeish back in the day. Heck, when I asked him about gays in general/in the service specifically once, he said, "I was raised in a time when it was seen as immoral. You were raised in an era that is much more understanding. And your kids will be raised in one more enlightened than you can ever imagine."  Very aware of his place and time, man.

If he saw Mr Spooner, he'd probably nod his head and say it was an honorable thing he did, speaking like that. Pop is a Vietnam Vet and as a rule, doesn't speak ill of people who serve, since such a large number of our elected officials never have. Raised me to respect them too; telling me while I was a kid, "If you ever see someone with one of these, (badges, pins, that show they were in Viet Nam), I'm asking you to shake that person's hand and tell them Welcome Home."  Later, he asked if I'd do the same to people my age who are serving overseas, because he doesn't think they get the attention and care they deserve. Walter would dig my Pop.

Anyway, I don't mean to be long winded. The long and the short of it is, he's now more politically aware now that he's retired. I was just as full of piss and vinegar during the previous administration and if someone told me back then that the President walked on water, I'd tell you it was because he was too stupid to swim. When I look at it from that more Dude-like "Well, that's just your opinion, Man," perspective, I see that I was once where he is now (just on the other side of the fence) and I know eventually he'll come around to believing they're all a bunch of rug pissers.

At least I'm housebroken.

brother_erwin

Thankee for your reply, Senator.
Yeah, let's hope the Dude's spirit reaches all - hopefully sooner than later!

I think the U.S.A. stands for United Sales of America.

Unfortunately.

Wish it weren't so.

Good to see that there's still some sence in the US.
I'm Belgian, working in a hotel and sometimes, man, sometimes these Murcas give us a look like we're all communist babyeaters or something. It's been awhile since I've seen that other face of the States. Glad to know you dudes are abiding, man :)

...communist babyeaters or something...

is a bit insulting.

Such a stereotype, we're not all communists.
