Jiddu Krishnamurti. Indian philosopher made famous in the early twentieth century. Here's what wikipedia has to sum up a bit of what he thought:

"Krishnamurti denounced the concept of saviors, spiritual leaders, or any other intermediaries to reality, and urged people to directly discover the underlying causes of the problems facing individuals and society. Such discovery he considered the natural outcome of unconditional, absolute psychological freedom, which he proclaimed to be within reach of everyone, irrespective of background, ability, or disposition. He vowed to work towards this goal of universal psychological freedom, and stated that understanding the actual relationships individuals have with themselves, society, and nature is of vital importance in attaining this objective."

The man preached no religion, caste, or nationality. After his death, nobody took up his teachings because, at his own insistence, he didn't want to become deified. A true dudeist priest if their ever was one.

Apologies for what is most likely a repeat nomination....but for me, Bruce Springsteen is a poster child for Dudeism. Also -- I dig Denis Leary. While he can be a little over the top at times, his basic message is "Live & let live - and leave me the fuck alone if you don't like my life"

I second Jake and Elwood Blues.

I would also like to nominate Carl Sagan, sure he may have been a scientist, but the man also liked to just chill out smoke some pot and relax.

Dude, I forgot about that list. This one has always really bothered me:

Sarah Silverman
Comedian, Actress, Agent Provacateur.

One of the funniest humans on earth, Silverman has managed to downplay her classic good-looks in exchange for current status as the most controversial and offensive comedian in the world (except maybe for that Danish guy that drew the Mohammed cartoon). Universally beloved by male dudes everywhere, who wish more women were like her, but with significantly lower standards.

I just don't get that at all. She is one of the most "Walter" people I can think of. Maybe worse than that. Yuck. Since when is being offensive a "Dude" quality? I am sure glad more women aren't like her, and I certainly don't find her to be attractive or funny in any way. She just seems mean.

I nominate Zonker Harris from the comic strip "Doonesbury". Zonker is one of the most Dude characters I can think of and he has been a Dude for about 40 years. His many titles and accomplishments include: Greatest Living Slacker, SPF 0 Solar Collector, Lifetime member of the Malibu Cannabis Buyers Club, Hippie, Ol' Surfer Dude, Prince of Inner Space, Excellence in Tanning at the Gerald R. Ford Summer Biathlon, and the all important reputation as a Freak. I think Zonker would be an excellent addition to the "Great Dudes in History" Hall of Fame.

I wanna jump on the Clint Eastwood nom, it at first seems counter intuitive, but when he talks you definitely see how he is a total Dude.
