Surely these are examples of Dudeism we admire, therefore they don't have to be "real" just good examples of Dudeism?

It is probable that the original Lao Tsu didn't exist, or didn't write all of the Tao Te Ching, it is more likely it is an amalgam of Taoist writings that have proved to be "Useful" or "Meaningful" so have been included together in the Tao Te Ching, then later all accredited to him. It's not important whether he wrote them or not, what is important is that they exist and have been found to contain some truth.

The same here, these are useful examples by which we may measure our own attempts at Dudeist living.
