You know if you look closely at the article, it's actually pretty fucked up.

I mean why shouldn't the guy be able to shoot his own lawn mower?

Why are the police involved and these exorbitant penalties (6 and half years in prison!

$11,000 in fines!)?

Actually, he's probably facing stiffer penalties for using a sawed-off shotgun than if he had used oone with a full length barrel.  I believe that in most states, it is a felony to posses a sawed-off shotgun.  But I admit I don't know that for certain.
