presenting Dudeism

  • So, I'm contemplating leading a service on Dudeism this summer for the UU church I belong to. I've been reading over posts in Dudeist Spiritualism to help me prepare, but if anyone has any additional info or tips or fun things I could do with a UU crowd, or wants to point me to other areas of the forum/site, let me know.

I figure I'll lean heavily on material in Under the Influences, as UUs dig that kind of stuff, and I'll also lead a short Dudeist ritual. Of course, a list of Dudeist scriptures would be in order, which I've seen mentioned in various posts here and there, and think I saved. Maybe I can show a movie clip as well, so would be interested in your opinions as to which scene or portion thereof would be a good general representation of dudeliness. Oh, yeah, and dudely music, including a song or two that people at least recognize fairly well and might want to sing along with.

Anyone want to step up to the bar?

  • When I'm explaining Dudeism to people I usually keep it simple to start the ball rolling, like abiding, relaxing, not stressing etc.  Then, lead with a few examples of Dudeliness and great Dudes and once they get the idea hit them with larger concepts such as our agnostic view of things that are bigger than mankind and the earth as we abide it.

The thing is just to gauge your audience, what they know, what they understand and what their standpoint is.  I mean, most dudely concepts are easy to slip in, as they're all smooth and easygoing, like an ice lolly, not like a lot of far-out, radical cactus-shaped concepts some people try and forcefeed others.  So, it's hard to go wrong, as long as you play to the listener's own sense of "yeah, that's cool and it's not directly anti what I believe".

It's all good, man.  Wishing you all the est with your pre-zen-tay-shun :)

Thanks, Rev. Ed. Will channel the Dude when presenting.

This will be a philosophically and theologically quite sophisticated audience, and most of them will tune in easily to the Dude's parlance as well. However, it would probably go over better if I cleaned up the language a bit. Either that or advertise it as R-rated.

I think the language is always optional.  I mean, I don't often swear if I don't think I need to, it's not mandatory.  I mean, we all love TBL The Fucking Short Version, but I wouldn't go before the council of world regions and use it as an example of tender theology, intelligent philosophy and a bridge to world unity.

Feel free to poach anything thing anyone here if you think it'll work, that's why it's here.  And likewise check the Dudespaper.  Apart from myself and my column Dude Simple, other great dudelosophers who like to hit big include The Archdudeship and his "No Frame of Reference" column, Rev Andrea Favro's smattering of wonderful articles found here and there, and Rev Hieronymus Moondog's column on "Pin Dudeism".  Some big concepts in there that might strike a chord with your audience, if you think they're ready ;)
